I dont think I seen this question so here it goes ,,,Is there any casting marks to
figure if a crank is for a 360 or a 390 being the stroke is different for each ?

Yes on the crank look on the edge of the counterweights. One should have a number. Depending on what year it might be a full CXXX-X number or a 2T, 2TA, 2U. The casting number on the head is between the center two spark plugs and the date code above it under the valve cover area. G.

 

To my knowledge, there is no difference between 360 heads and 390 head or 352 heads. They are the same.
The exception is '72 - '76 trucks; the FE was dropped from cars about '70, and in '72 the truck heads received a D2T designaton. Before that, they were a C*A designation, indicating a car design.
My '66 has C4AE car heads on it, for example.
The 360 crank is identical to the 352 crank, but the casting numbers will tell the difference in intened application.
You will need to check the casting numbers (or measure the stroke) to distinguish between 390 and 360/352 cranks.

 

Measuring the stroke is probably the easiest. 3.5" = 352 / 360, 3.784" = 390 / 406 / 427

If it's a 2T or 2TA you definately have a 360 crank. If it's anything else post it and we can decipher it for you.

 

The FE heads of different years have different combustion chamber shape and volume. For instance, your C4 heads are different than my C8AE-H heads. The C8 and D2 heads are identical except for the hardened seats in the D2's. Others here will certainly fill in the details...

Valves are all the same size, except 428CJ (C8OE?)

However, you are right, there is no "360" or "390" head. But the heads from different years ARE different, just not specificly a 360 or 390.

360- 3.50 stroke.. 2T and 2TA
390- 3.78 stroke..
C1AE-A, D or H
C2AE-B

C4AE-C or D

C6AE-A or C
C6JE-J marine reverse rotation

2TA

EXCELLENT replys ,,, Only reason I asked is that I am picking up a few cranks here n there and its hard to keep em seperated . Likewise for the cylinder heads. The cylinder heads bug'd me because of the different cc's in heads
per engine .

 

Pickup a copy of the Steve Christ book "How to rebuild big block Ford engines. This has most of the popular head, crank, block, rods etc.....casting numbers, specs and such. Keep it in the truck when you go "fishin" for parts for quick ID and specs. Just a thought. On ebay for $18.99 or any local/online book store can order it. Mustangs Unlimited sells it also. There are also a few places online with part and casting number info for the FE. Check out www.woodyg.com click on the Fairlane site at the top. Then once there scroll down to "FE big block engine section" and you'll see the links for all the parts. It's not a complete listing but good for most popular FE components. G.
