I recently replaced the stock 302 in my '90 F-150 with a 351. I thought it would be an easy swap until the 351 and the AOD tranny wouldn't go all the way together. The 351 previously had an E40D tranny bolted up to it. Before installing the 351 I asked several parts stores including NAPA, Autozone, and Advanced Auto if i needed a different flywheel. Every one of them told me that E40D and AOD take the same flywheel which i found out was wrong after i ruined the old AOD when the torque converter and pump were pushed back too far. After some close examination what i thought were Ford ovals stamped into the flywheels were transmission identifications. the 351 flywheel was stamped E40D, and C6. Then I went to another Autozone and they had the right flywheel. I just hope nobody else ever has this problem.
First, automatic transmissions don't have flywheels, they have flexplates.
Second, you haven't been to flywheel hell until you have tried to get a new flywheel for the M5OD with the 302. The 302 is externally balanced and you have to have the correct flywheel or the engine will shake itself to pieces. Been there done that.
I am glad you got what you need and everything worked out.
