Am I crazy?. Pre oiled filter before installing.

Hey guys when I changed oil the other day on my 7.3 I added a 1.5 qts of oil to thenew oil filter before I installed it. Since the base is on top and the filter underneath there was no mess involved. Added 13 qts instead off 15 run the engine checked my dipstick and added accordingly. My reasoning is the engine is lubricated quickly instead off having to wailt for the oil filter to fill up. Does anybody else out there do this?. Or am I the only dumb or smart one out there? Ive done this to all my vehicles, tractors, engines.

You are supposed to put oil in the filter prior to assembly.

I started doing this on my last oil change. Just another thing that I learned about on this forum. I find the longer I view this forum the more I learn about my truck and the more modifications I have started to make to it. All of this knowledge is starting to cost me a little money in truck toys.

Not crazy at all - you are doing it the way it needs to be done.

My bona-fides:

31 years in trucking
14 years running big truck repair shops
38+ years working on my own and others vehicles

If one of my mechanics does not prefill the oil filter when doing the service it is a disciplinary issue.

Maybe so but there are two things to remember:

1) The money you save will offset the money you spend (or at least that is what I tell Lovely Wife)

2) The mods you do make the truck that much more enjoyable - er - FUNCTIONAL - yeah, that's it. The chip will save money in the long run with better fuel economy!! (as long as I keep my foot out of the throttle, like THAT will really happen).

Thanks for posting this question....never knew that! Luckily I just bought my 99 PSD and don't need to do my first oil change for about 4K more miles!

The real payback comes when the wife offers up: "You know, it's amazing how much better the truck runs now that you've got some things corrected." Yeah, Honey!! I've also found some other things that need to be corrected, too.
Not that I have a problem convincing Mrs. Quadzilla to spend money on the truck. I was lucky enough to marry a motor head.

Oh, I am not complaining about the money. I love the toys and the differences that they have made. I can't believe the improvements that they have made. I love my truck and my friends are all envious of what I drive. I sure have learned a lot on this forum though. I am getting to where I can't make it more than a day or two before I feel the need to log on and see what everyone is talking about.

Not just diesels, I always prefill (when I can) on any engine. The only exception is if the filter is mounted on its side and even then I at least put some oil in it first to "pre-wet" the element.

No matter how the filter is positioned, you always want to wipe the new filters o-ring with oil to make sure its gonna seat right. I know you all probably know this but there might be somebody who doesent. If you dont it will most likely leak. Derek
