I have just come into possesion of a 87' 4x4 with a 302, in need of some TLC.
This past week it blew the lower radiator hose, which I replaced but still had a leak. I was thinking it was the water pump so I replaced it and am still leaking somewhere on the top right area of the pump. First my thought process is that is not the timing cover since I do not see any oil coming from the area. The aluminum threads are trash and I did strip one in that area. Is it possible th timing cover is the real problem ?

well I found the cause of the problem, the water is coming from the timing cover gasket on the right side just below the valve cover area, by using a pump sprayer to the area fluid started coming out of the timing cover that normally is covered by the water pump. Also if anyone needs to know if you get a reman waterpump from autozone double check the plate you will find that the rotation of the fluid through the pump is not correct which leaves this hole uncovered by the gasket, that the original gasket did cover. Now the work starts, but its just work!!

Please post back on this - I believe I'm in the same situation -seeping at bolts and coolant ports into block 95 302. Also let us know how the pan gasket part goes - the factory manual says to cut pan gasket and use sealer at the joint but I just put a onre piece pan gasket on a year or so ago. Don't follow completely pump sprayer testing - was this just to clean or did you pressurize the system with it? Thanks.
I have done 4 in the last year gasket between the timing cover and the block. They have a history of this when they get older. If it has a lot of miles on it you might consider changing timing gears and chain while you are in there. The job is same just one more bolt to take loose.
the pump sprayer was originally just to clean-up , but then I sprayed it right on top of the gasket that is when I saw fluid come from the mid area of the timing cover. Right now I am waiting on a new timing cover . oh yes and be sure you know about your motor if anyone else has done anything I have just learned about reverese flow ( trucks with sserp belt).
