N.Y. thurway tolls

I was checking out the toll price for the n.y. thruway (on their web site) since we are going to travel on it this summer. I was reading they are going to change how they charge for tolls. If I read the web site correctly- a pickup towing a trailer would be charged the same as a semi. These are proposals but if they go in effect in May. we are going to change our travel plans. Has anyone in N.Y. heard of the toll change? I figured the route we would travel currently at $19.50 but would raise to $54.00

Usually they hit you per axle. When I last used the thruway I was charged double the passenger rate (car trailer). Did you know that when the Thruway was built, the toll was to remain in effect until the road was payed (about 20 years ago) for?? You are probably entering NY through Niagra Falls, hook up with Rt 20 it is a pretty good E-W road and will take you all the way to Albany, and nice views around the Cherry Valley area. I use it when I go to see my brother in Buffalo. PM me if you want more info. George

I was considering using I-86 then I-88. we are going to Bar Harbor Maine this summer. Does anyone know how this road is?
GLR, Thanks for the 20 info.
The route 20 looks good but prefer the freeways as we are on a time schedule (one wk vacation+ traveling on wkends) and coming from Michigan.

It sounds like you might be taking I 90 through Ohio. Most of the students at Cornell U in Ithaca go through Canada from Michigan. When my son was in Columbus, we would travel I 86 (17). 86 is a little squigly but not too bad. 88 is a good road, I use it when going to Albany.. then you can pick up 90 to 495 to 95. 495 will keep you away from Boston. To give you an idea of time, Ithaca to Cleveland about 5hrs (according to Browns fans) Ithaca to Albany about 3 hrs. Good luck, and safe traveling. PS fill up in Erie, PA avoid higher prices in NY

GLR thanks for the info. We are from the Lansing area. So the the time line will be pretty close for us. We are pulling a 30' trailer so just need good roads, with as little stop and go as possible. I've been online to all major truckstops and getting their prices on diesel. Yes we are going the I 90 leg because I checked fuel in Canada and It is very expensive. And the miles saved isn't very much. Besides then we don't have to wait at the border for the border check. My luck they would have me take everything out of the trailer. Been there done that before. Not fun.

Yes there are toll roads. Naturally the ones that the most people would use. East - west corridor is the favorite to have as a toll road.

Yup, they get toll roads in the mid-West and East. We don't have those here in the west. In turn, we pay 30 to 40 cents more a gallon for gas.

Break it up a little. Take I-90 E to exit 46, then south on 332 (about 8 mi.) to 5&20 E. Stay on that through Auburn, where 5&20 split, then route 20 to Skaneateles, then north through Elbridge and Warners to exit 39, and you're back on I-90. I PROMISE you it's one of the prettiest drives through New York State.

If things keep going up in this state (NY) everyone will be gone.
Property taxes are ridiculous, sales tax is almost 10%, we have the highest fuel prices, we pay high income tax, health insurance and so on and so on.
This has to stop. I think New York city should become its own state. Does anyone from NYState feel we are supporting them - welfare, maintenance etc.

I completely agree. I moved to upstate NY with my job last summer, and I have to say that this state is the most expensive state I have ever lived in. The taxes are utterly rediculous, and I believe a big part of that is New York City. I live closer to Boston, MA than NY city! This is absurd!!!
