about how ling is the axel? Does it go back in easily or is it splined on the end and can only go in one way. Ya i wish i could get away with a piece of wood. Unfortunately our government dosn't agree with that !

The axle is oooh, about 3 feet long, or so. It will come right out after you unbolt the eight axle flange bolts. Someone may have used silecone to seal the axle flange mounting surface instead of replacing the gasket. If so, you will just need to use a little gentle persuasion to get it broke loose. Once it is free, it will come right out. When re-installing, just slide it back in till it bottoms out. If the flange is still sticking out a little, just turn the axle until the splines line up inside at the differential. No problem though. It's a piece of cake.

Whoops I forgot to use the edit

EDIT:
Don't forget to either replace the gasket or a little silicone gasket maker will work on the flange surface at the drum.
