My transmission question is for my 1965 Tbird with the 390 w/cruise-0-matic tranny. I hope you won't mind it is not a truck. I have trucks with the 390, but I am stumped about the tbird tranny. I got the car jacked off the ground so I can put the tranny in gear while running. My question is, with the tranny in neutral (I disconnected the linkage, so I can operate from the tranny) I am still getting engagement of the tranny (driveline turns and wheels). The reason I am checking the tranny is when I was driving it and in neutral, I could see the speedometer moving even though I am not moving and I can hear what sounds like the tranny revolving. Thanks for any info.
Ok square one.
Does the vehicle move when it is on the ground with the lever in neutral?
If the answer is no, it is very common for wheels to turn if there is no weight on them. This is due to some friction in the various clutch packs and is not to be considered dangerous or mysterious.
If the vehicle moves when the wheels are on the ground and the lever in Neutral then yes you do have a problem.
Would you please answer my question.
What are you trying to do?
When the car is running and in neutral, with the wheels on the ground, the speedometer is reading 30-40 mph even though the car is not moving. Also, I can hear something rubbing underneath the car from the tranny area. I took off the inspection plate to see if the torque converter bolts where loose and they seem to be OK. Then I decided to put the car on four jacks and see what it would do. I realize there will be some movement of the rear wheels, but it seems excessive. I am hoping I don't have to pull the tranny, but I may have to. I was hoping I am missing some type of adjustment that can be made to the tranny while in the car, but maybe not. Just asking for any other ideas or tests I can try before I go to the problem of pulling it. Thanks.
If the speedometer is registering with the wheels on the ground and transmission in Neutral there is a problem with either the differential or slip yoke.
What happens when the lever is shifted into a drive position?
