I have a Dieseling Sound when my 93 idles at normal operating temperature. Why is it doing that? Of better yet, how would I fix it? It's not a bad sound, just came up a few weeks ago.
yah know, It's funny you mention this. I have a 96 with the 302, and I am running 5w30, the truck has 100k on it, and at idle when the oil is warm, it sounds like a dieseling sound, other than that, the truck only uses maybe 1/4 quart of oil every 3k miles.

---I'm real close to 100k, I'm at 94k now, and I also use 5w-30, and have for about a year. I think the sound started about then too? Truck uses no oil yet though.
Kind of really made me scared when I first heard it. This week it has been really hot here, so I have really noticed it at night when parked and running. It actually started about a year ago when I first bought the truck used, and of course I said my god what did I buy!! At least I know I am not hearing things though.
Ah yes! The infamous diesel sound. I have had many trucks go from gasoline to diesel over night.
The two most popular items on a gasoline engine that will make it sound like a diesel are the pollution pump and the water pump. I would have to say that most of the time it was the pollution pump making the noise. When they wear, the get sloppy inside and are harder to rotate. They can make a hard "clucking" type sound when they are worn. I have had them seize up.
I specifically remember the water pump on my 89' F-150 make a very similar sound. 4.9 GAS engine. The pump lasted a long time with this sound. When I finally replaced it, the sound went away. Six months later, I had a new clucking type diesel sound coming from the new pump. Go figure. Jake.
