Farewell Dan Rather
Rather's arrogance. His ego. His 'editorializing' the news to show HIS viewpoint and/or agenda.
I forget the name of the movie, but, Albert Finney was the actor that was portraying a news anchor, not unlike Dan Rather. Right at the end of the movie he said (as part of the script) "This box. . . (using his index fingers to draw in the air, a television set) it is here to give information, not to show my or our viewpoint, or to editorialize, but, to give the information that is available and allow you to make your own decisions about what is going on in the world, today."
Or something to that effect.
To be honest, I'm not real fond of any of the news 'anchors' on the Big 3, at all.
I just keep remembering that blurb from the movie. If I wanted an editorial, I'd read the newspaper column.
Like I said previously, it was a sad, sad day when Walter Cronkite left.
He (acording to polls) was (and might still be) the most trusted man in America.
My 2¢, again.
Network news (ie NBC, CBS, ABC) has been behind in the ratings to CNN, since the first Iraq war.
Dan Rather was there to see a lot of events, and do I think he was a great on the scene reporter, hell yes.
Do I think he asked tough questions of our leaders, hell yes.
Do I think he was biased and that goes against what the news is, hell yes.
I will say I was also sickened by Bill O'riely, Mr. No spin himself played soft ball with Pres Bush. But do I think that the other news anchors are biased, and are to "leftist" yes.
Dan Rather was around for to long, and I don't like his replacement either. I've watched NBC news for the nightly news lately, and MSNBC is about as close to middle of the road as i can get in the news. Fox might as well say "paid for by the republican party" and the rest might as well paste Hillary Clintons face in the background.
You've just got to look at all the sides, and decide what is best for you.
I won't miss Dan Rathers as a anchor, but I will miss him as a field reporter.
i only noticed in the last year or so, but its strange how you can take one story and how different it will be reproted in the various news agencies.
and plus, my wife who is russian, always reads what is reported from russian news agencies.
its just strange how reporters can put a personal politic side to a story they are reporting on, angling it to make it better for their beleif.
makes me wonder sometimes................
He was there when Kennedy was shot.
He was there, and suffered physical attacks from others, during the civil rights movement.
He asked to go to Vietnam so he could see what was happening first hand, and returned many times, not as a distant reporter, but on the front lines.
He asked tough question of all of the leaders he interviewed, whoever they were.
He was in the middle of the 1968 Democratic convention mess, both inside and outside the building.
He went into Afganastan in disguise while they were at war with Russia.
He went to Iraq during the first Gulf War to try to interview Saddam Hussein, and managed to do it.
He was there at the square in China when the students protested, and while they were taken out by the government army.
Even as anchor, he asked to be sent to the most dangerous parts of the world to get the real story, with no guarantee of safety.
He was, and is, a "reporters reporter". He will ask the hard questions, no matter who you are. It wasn't good enough for someone, even the government, to tell him what was going on, he wanted to see for himself, and then show the world through the camera lens.
He has made mistakes, as we all have. He will be the first to admit it. I have watched him, and could bite nails I was so mad at what I considered his bias.
I have seen him on talk shows, and he was hilarious, a real down to earth, funny guy.
You have to give him his credit. He knew he wanted to be a reporter all his life. He made it on his own. He has been more places, done more things, and saw first hand many history changing events. Only a very select few ever get the opportunity to do the things he has done.
As for all of them, as far as I'm concerned, TV is entertainment - period. And I use the term "entertainment" very loosely when it comes to the big mouth, big ego idiots who spend their half hour yelling at each other and interrupting their guests. If my kids acted that way I'd slap 'em...
