<HR style="COLOR: #666666" SIZE=1><!-- / icon and title --><!-- message -->I just installed a NAPA air filter part # 6637 on my '99 PSD. It required that I remove the stock filter housing to get it to fit. BIG filter. The rubber air boot that went to the stock filter housing fit right over the flange on the new air filter. It was a bit of a stretch getting it on, but in the end it was a perfect fit.

The oil you see further down the intake is normal. The crankcase vents oily gasses out and by Ford's design it's routed to the intake. You can look for info on the CCV mod, which reroutes the crankcase gases through a setup to filter the oil out, or just straight into the atmosphere. Those who do the CCV mod end up with a cleaner engine with no oil residue collecting on the intercooler boots.
What Pocket said. Since I did the ccv mod on my truck the intake system is bone dry, and with that giant air filter in there, clean enough to serve your dinner on!
If the 6637 filter flows more air then the engine could ever hope to be able to use...then whats the point on an aftermarket intake?
You don't want your engine having to pull hard at all for air. So to have more than the motor wants at its beck and call is a plus. Then lets say you go and add chip, exhaust system, swamps injectors and a killer fuel pump with high volume HPOP all later and find 400 HP your motor is still not going to pull hard for air. Having surplus air to suck in is certainly not going to hurt anything or cost any extra HP either.

Dropping in the 6637 filter is basically a homemade aftermarket intake. It functions the same as the Tymar style and other styles of intakes (more air flow and better filtering over stock airbox). Don't get me wrong, the companies that manufacture aftermarket intakes do make quality products, but they are a company and have to make money to stay in business. If you have the money to spend, purchase your intake. If you are the type of person who likes to play with your truck hands on and do your own thing, then make your own. Either way you should be happy with the results in the end and that's what matters most.
I have the 6637 mod but before I did it I was wanting to just put a huge K&N cone filter because of it being able to be reused but I haven't seen one person with a K&N on. Is this because it doesn't capture particles as well as the 6637?
I use one. Haven't had any problems, but they don't filter quite as good as the 6637 is what I've heard. I don't think you'd have problems if it is maintained properly.
