I got in my truck today and took off. Went to make my first turn to work and found I had no turn signals, no gas, oil, alt, or temp guages. (No brake lights either, from the fingers I got.) Flipped around and went home and took secondary driver to work. Running lights work, speedo and odometer work. Seems like electrical went bad for a time. I came home from work and got in the truck to troubleshoot and everything was fine. Is it possible that I didn't turn key far enough to engage the (guage) electrical system or is there a guage cluster voltage-regulator somewhere that is going bad? I know about the turn signal switch controlling all the lights but would that control guage functions as well? Oh yeah: Truck: '69 F250, CS, Ranger
Thanks
Had a similar prob a yr ago with my '72. Swapped the ignition switch and everything was fine. If yours is original, it is wore out, and when you look at the replacements, you wonder how they last as long as they do. At least they dont cost much and are easy to change.
Thanks for the replies. Baitmaster, I've never replaced an ignition switch. That does seem the likely problem. My key used to fall out of my '70 while I was driving around, and I'd have to put it back in just to shut the truck off. Will I be able to keep the lock tumbler part when I put the new one in, and still have just my original key, or will I have a new one for the ignition and the old one for the doors?
if memory serves me you turn the key to the accessory position and take a needle or paper clip and stick it in the tiny hole and that releases the tumbler so you can swap it to the new switch.
If you have to replace the tumbler you can still have one key cut the doors on one side the ignition on the other side the double cut key is just for convenience only one side is used. Cut a notch on one side of the handle to ID. the door or ign.
Not much to changing the switch if you have a paper clip. I just changed the whole lock assembly when i had to. Bought 3 locks, igniton/2 doors at the Ford dealer. I would change the whole assembly, not just the tumbler/key portion. If you have some burned/shorted contacts in there, that would do it too.
Many, many times this samething hsa happen to me,I turned the key a bite more to the right & bingo all worked. Now 2 weeks ago replaced switch 26 bucks at a new old stock place.Ha,if your key has come out when your driving then just maybe your key should be replaced as for the key.My pro-blem was starting up some times good and not so good just crank & crank then catch & start as, I let off the key. 3 months ago replace door locks 13 bucks at auto zone. Some ign switchs have flat blade & some are round Terminals so you may want to check first if you have to order one. Getting the right part the first time is Nice. my 2 cents
