More cryin over 460 mileage

Had to park the chevette and take the truck out of the garage this morning. It was a very emotional time.....I really love this truck! I really hate this mileage! The love of my life is a 1994 f250 supercab 4x4, 460, E4OD, 4.10, and those nice fat 33x12.50's sure look good. The problem is the 9 mpg and $2 per gallon gas. I am considering swapping the 4.10 gears for 3.55's or 3.31's. Is anyone running this combination? How is your mileage? Is it worth the trouble? I am not looking for miracles but I drive a minimum 30 miles per day so I either squeeze 3 or 4 more mpg out or she spends a lot of lonely time in the garage.

Thanks
Steve Hefner

More cryin over 460 mileage

Yeah.... I know how ya feel. I moved out of Southern Ca a year ago and I'm lovin life in Montana! I thought the gas was gonna get bad. I have a 1990 F250 123,800 miles with a 351 EFI E4OD and a 3:55. I now get 13.42mpg after a set of power pulleys, K&N FIPK, and a Poweraid spacer plate on the throttle body and an MSD TFI Blaster coil - 48,000 volts. I love my truck too. But the gas here just went up to 1.61 for reg unleaded. So I'm considering a set of headman headers with a high flow cat and dual 2 1/2 tail pipes. That should get me into the 14-15 range if I'm lucky.
Good luck!

LAST EDITED ON 30-May-01 AT 10:17 PM (EST)[p]$1.61? Can you ship some of that out to Illinois? We're lucky if we get down to $1.85 anymore, and we're a county with only about 13000 people! Anyway, friend of mine's got a 250 with a 460 about like yours except it's 2wd and I believe it has a 3.95 rear end. It gets around 12.

I would almost pack up and move for $1.61 gas! of course by the time I got there it would be $2.25. I started out with a full MSD ignition and Flowmaster exhaust, runs good and sounds good but didn't help much with the mileage.

I have 3.55 gears in my 95 E350 w/ a 460, I get 9-11 mpg (got 6 towing last weekend). Changing the gears might get you some, but it doesn't seem it will get you as much as you want.

Cray is talking about my 1990 F-250 with a 460 and 3.55 rearend. We have got 17mpg out of it before on the highway, althought city driving is nothing to brag about.

Times are different since the last post man. Gas is better now. Out on 41, you can get gas for $1.07 now.

Glad to hear the gas prices are getting better for you guys, out here in the Peoples Republic of Kalifornia were are still looking at 1.59 for regular! Better but still too much at 9mpg.

I have pretty much the same rig as you do, 94 F250 460 4x4 blah blah. I at best get 12mpg on mixed city freeway, but usually 10-11mpg. I have read on this list of some people getting 13 or 14 so it looks like with the weight, drivetrain drag etc of this model, life is gonna cost you. Partially due to this I put less than 5,000 on my truck each year now. Only use it to tow my trailer, the wife's Mercury minivan with riceburner engine ain't up to it.

Gas for less than $1.20? I'm moving there. And to think, just two years ago I could tank up for $.85. Now in Oregon, land of the "too stupid to fill it your self" laws, gas is about $1.50 if I am lucky. Been a long time since I could fill up my old Datsun rice burner for less than the cost of a Big Mac and a Coke.

Plodding along at near $60 per fillup,

Jim Henderson

I would invest in an capacitive discharge ignition system. MSD 6A or Jacobs even. They will improve your mileage. Especially with the big hog 460 you are running.

Try them, what can it hurt for $130?

Thanks for the advice Randy, I already added an MSD 6A system with Ford 9mm performance wires. It didn't help the mileage. I did use Platinum plugs and now I have heard that you don't get the best performance using Platinum plugs with the MSD ignition?(anyone have any opinion on that one?).

That's right. MSD and Platinums don't go together. Never use platinums and an MSD, you won't get much mileage difference.

Your best bet is sidegapped motorcraft. Gap them a little larger than normal if you have a blaster coil, otherwise stay on the large side of stock.

Try the blaster coil also, it might help. other than that, start looking at tire pressures, wind resitance, and synthetic oils.
