Misfire #2

Have a misfire on #2. Code read at Autozone was p0302. I pulled the plug it was clean and normal, gap ok. Spark plug wire was ok to.

This is a 98 4.6l in a 2wd f150 with 99,000 miles. Plugs and wires changed about 12,000 miles ago. Plugs are platinums. It has the 2 coil packs at the front of the engine.

The misfire can occur cold or hot. Mostly under moderate acceleration the check engine light might flash. Sometimes it run flawlessly but most of the time it has a rough feel when runing.

I thought if it was a plug/wire/ignition the plug would be wet or fouled but it was dry and normal looking.

How can I tell if this is ignition or fuel/injector related.

Welcome
You can try by swapping coil packs side to side. If the misfire moves, then the coil pack is probably bad.

Try this...

Similar thing happened not too long ago. Changed plugs a few thousand earlier, then got #5 misfire with stuttering under moderate load (about 3000 RPM). Changed coil with no difference, talked to dealer and they said replace the plug too as a set, may look OK but may have carbon fouling. Tried that and problem went away.

For a while, that is. Headed out to garage now to do the same w/ #7. Got the same symptoms now with that cylinder. Wonder if I should've left the dang plugs alone...

What plug are you running and what brand of wire.

This motor is very sensitive, so make sure you run a motorcraft plug and plug wire set.

Anything else may be causing your troubles.

I doubt the coil pack is bad, that year coil pack just doesn't go bad very often at all. You could swap it from side to side, but I think it needs plugs and or wires.

I've got a "99 4.6L. Make sure your plug boots are not backing off the plugs; my #8 did and I could hear the spark arcing with the engine running and the hood open. I recrimped the terminal in the plug boot after the 2nd time it backed off; channel lock pliers did the trick. Problem occurred after changing plugs and wires.

BTW, I have 2 used coil packs, OEM off the '99. Email me for a cheap price plus shipping.

I'm having the same problem on my '97 4.6L. Thought it was the transmission because it doesn't do it in overdrive. I too changed my plugs and wires about 12k miles ago. My check engine light does NOT come on...could it still be the plugs?
