Just got back from the Ford dealer. Had my plugs changed today and had a long talk with the service manager about the spark plug blow out problem. He said that while he had heard of the problem, he had not seen it with the V10. The ones he had seen were the 5.4 and most of those were the result of poor installation by the owners. I asked how he could tell it was the owners fault and he said they would use "off brand" plugs. I guess if it isn't from the dealer, then it's off brand. Anyway, I found his comments interesting. It did make me feel a little better about my engine.
The V10 has definitely had fewer cases of 'blow-out', but that may be mostly because there are a lot fewer of them than the 5.4L. Percentage-wise, they may have the same rate of occurance. Still, it's not an overly common occurance... drive on!
Drive on , I shall--Thx. I guess after hearing so much about it, it's good to hear from a Ford service person that there is a problem, but it's not that frequent. He mentioned that they have never had a blow out problem after replacing the plugs on a V10. But I'm still going to have him recheck the torque next oil change! Har Har!
i work in a dealer and have seen plugs blow out of the vw's also. in such cases we find the other plugs loose and 95% of the time they are off brand telling us self installed. or some one thinking to fast not carefull. if you do a site search you will find the s/d owners all say use a torqe wrench and recheck them. it goes for all mod motor fords not just the 5.4 or 6.8's . it may be a pia to do but it may save you a head replacement also that costs a lot more
The plug bow out problem certainly has occured on the V10, but it is rather infrequent.
Its not all that common on a 5.4 either - just think of the number of those engines out there.
As long as you have them torqued correctly you should be fine.
Where I live I see a lot of V10's and they do blow spark plugs. 3 of my friends have had the problem. So far I have been the lucky one! Does any one know if the problem has been resolved on the late production V10's? I have a friend that would like to buy one, but he is afraid of the spark plug issue. He had it with his 5.4. The latest I have heard was from a guy that worked for one of our utility companys and it was a 15,000 mile 2003 Super Duty. With the 100,000 mile recommended spark plug change Ford states in the owners manual all of the blows I know about came as they did straight from the factory and the plugs had not been touched by the owner. It is an issue I wish Ford would resolve. As far as I am concerned the problem is far too frequent! It is a very expensive fix!

Just remember to not trust 100 percent what the dealer tells you. The service manager here tells you they have not seen the problem but I know at least one person who had this same dealer do the repair after it happened. Also, about a year ago, someone posted here that they blew a plug and had to be towed to this same dealer. I think Ford tells them not to admit to problems. This is a high volume service department and I bet they have seen a bunch of them.
