I just bought an '02 Explorer XLS this past Saturday. I am new to Ford products as far as ownership goes. The odometer LCD display is really dim. I have tried using the dimmer switch but that doesn't change the brightness. If I turn on the headlights, it is even dimmer and almost impossible to read. Any ideas on what's wrong, or how to fix it?

I haven't a clue. But LCD uses ambient light or a light source from somewhere, so there must be a bulb in there. Of course you will probably have to take the dash out to investigate, and that is never much fun.
Well, a new development... I tapped on the instrument cluster before I pulled out of the driveway this morning and the display went to it's proper brightness! Which leads me to believe it must be a bad cold solder connection. So far the display is working correctly now. I did a search and found a post on this same topic. Searched for "blackout" "odometer".
