Just a general question. I have a 83 300 L6. Taking into consideration that everything else is in spec. ( timing, etc. ). What heat range plug, hotter or cooler, would be the best for reducing preignition in an engine?
I'm getting what sounds like a crackling, pinging sound at about 50-65 mph. The timing is set at the correct mark, 10 degrees BTDC. Since I bought it in 1983 I've had problems that always made me use 93 octane. It never ran well on 87. Now even with 93 it pings, I'd hate to adjust (retard) the timing too much, then the pickup will suffer. That's the story.
Does the truck have EGR? If so it might be malfunctioning. If not, check the vacuum to the distributor. If it has manifold vacuum it will add timing at light throttle and do nothing at high throttle. If it's ported vacuum it will add nothing at idle, but give full advance at part throttle. If the distributor is supposed to have manifold, but is getting ported, it will have about 15 degrees of timing at highway speed that aren't supposed to be there.
Thanks for the help. I'll look into all the possible problems. I know that when I press the gas a little, the van would be going about 20mph, the EGR makes a groan-grunting sound. It always did. I thought it was just the way it was supposed to act.
