My trusty old '90 Ford Ranger just turned over 200 grand, and is going great, BUT...tonight driving home from work, I smelled coolent and when I put the switch to "Defrost". my windows fogged up big time.
Now I know that's the classic signs of a failing heater core, but what I need to know is: what is involved in fixing the problem?
I don't want to get overcharged by my mechanic, "Zorro" again...Is it a difficut and expensive operation, or ???
I need enough info to fend off any expensive ideas from my masked mechanic!
On your "older" Ranger it's pretty straightforward, you can easdily do it yourself with a Haynes Manual. Or do a search and you'll come up with several previous threads describing the process.
For '95 + the instrument panel (dash) has to come out.
Yeah, I think that is a simple unscrew the access panel, pull out the old one, push in the new one (and attach hoses), and reattach the panel. I hope that whichever Ford engineer decided that they would "improve" the design should be sentenced to a lifetime of doing this repair on a '98 Ranger.
