I pulled mine off with my fingers, I have a 93 tho so it may be different. Once off, you can use the marks behind the smog pump. I set mine to 13 btdc. Use paint to highlight the mark on the bottom pulley
Don't mean to hijack the post, but this is related.
The 300-6 EFI I am working on has 2 sets of timing marks. One set is cast into the timing gear cover and the other is a bolted on timing tab on the right hand side of the engine. Which do I use? Why are there 2 sets?
Thanks,
DannyP
You use the stamped steel on the right. Don't know why there are two sets of marks; maybe the others were used on carb engines or 240's?
The spout connectors should just pull out of its recepticle. If it's never been out before it will probably be hard to get out. The engine must be running to set the timing. My truck likes 14-16 degrees.
When finding the mark on the harmonic balancer, make sure you use the fine line that goes all the way across it. It may be hard to find. Do not use the V notch. Drove me nuts until I figured that one out.

Glad you mentioned that. The notch at the rear of the balancer is the only one I was aware of.
Thanks to all for the help.

while you guys are talking about timiming.. i have a 92 f150 4.9 and the base timing is set at 10dbtdc. well when i plugged the spout in the timing didnt move???? some one recamended replaceing the module.
My advice -- forget the timing light. Turn your motor to #1 cylinder top dead center, now turn your distrinutor to fire on the #1 cylinder. Pit the cap on, leave the dustributor loose, crank the motor, rotate the distributor until the motor sound smooth. Works like a charm. USe the light and the marks are hard to even see and when it says it correct, even advanced a little, my motor wasn't running all that well.
Got the timing adjusted seems OK. Only thing is after about a minute of running the timing starts to jump around a little (a couple of degrees up usually). Happened with and w/o the spout in. Is this a serious problem?
