Hey guys my newest problem
for a while now my truck has been idling rough idle goes up a tiny bit and gets smoothe for a few seconds then drops and gets a little rough, no missing just rough
well now ive got an aweful pinging when ever i hit the gas at higher rpms
checked for vac. leaks
checked for codes and found nothing
fuel and air filters are relatively new
tried premium, no luck there either
any ideas?
-Sam
I have a 99 2.5l and mine does the same thing. The idle problem is the AC compressor kicking on and off, turn the heater off and it will stop. As far as the pinging goes, the 2.5 has a 9.5:1 compression ratio which is fairly high for use with regular gas even though the owners manual says 87 is recommended. Ive tried cleaning the intake and it helped a bit, nothing stops the pinging better than premium gas, Its only a few more bucks a tank and it is way worth it.
tried premium and it didnt help, and the idle is only worsend by the compressor use
the pinging is pretty bad and it only started about say a month ago

my 2000 2.5 does not ping at all on 87 octane. It used to with Amoco and mobil but I switched to the cheap stuff at Quiktrip (citgo) and it stopped pinging.
Regarding the idle problem, this might be worth looking into:
Article No. 00-3-5
FORD: 1998-2000 RANGER; 1998-99 TAURUS SHO
ISSUE
A high idle may occur on some vehicles. This may
be caused by a poor electrical connection at the
wire harness (-12B637-) to Throttle Position Sensor
(TPS).
ACTION
Splice into wire harness (-12B637-) just after the
TPS with TPS Connector High Idle Service Kit.
Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
Verify the concern vehicle exhibits a “high idle”
condition when depressing the clutch or shifting
between gears for the Ranger or when shifting
between Park and/or Neutral for Taurus SHO. If
high idle condition is not exhibited, proceed with
other driveability diagnostic fix procedures. If
condition is present, obtain a High Idle Service Kit
(XF1Z-15K607-AA) and proceed by following the
instructions found within the service kit.

You might consider changing your spark plugs? Using a higher than recommended octane can cause carbon build up in the engine. I changed my plugs in my '01 2.5 around 74K and it ran a LOT better! I used to get that pinging and rough idle... it used to almost stall out actually. I might not be describing what was happening quite right, but either way, it's an idea. Try checking what one of the easier to get to plugs looks like. And another thing... I don't use Amoco or other brands that advertise cleaning agents in the gas or whatever they say they add... it has helped with how it runs.
You may want to try replacing the Idle Air Control sensor. Mine went out at about 57k. There is ushually a code that is set but yours may not be completely gone yet. It's not very expensive and it beats the heck out of the truck dieing while you are coming off of an exit ramp (sudden power steering loss, not fun!).
are you talking about the IAC cause im not sure where an IAC sensor is?
gunna clean my MAF and see what happens
thanks
-Sam
The IAC sensor is a small cyilinder shaped sensor mounted horizontally on the top of the intake. It's about the size of a salt shaker and has an alumminum-type finish. Its right on top and easy to get to when you pop the hood. You can go pick one up and take a look at it to make sure you are pulling off the right sensor.
yea thats the IAC valve, i didnt know it was called a sensor, i know where that is, fords been using those for since day one with fuel inj. and they all look the same
tried cleaning the maf and my throttle body, and no luck, im gunna pull my plugs next and maybe try the fuel filter again
Some of our 4-cylinder Rangers have suffered from carbon build-up in the EGR port.
This causes the combustion temperature to be hotter than ideal circumstances - EGR open, passage clear and exhaust to cool the temperature.
Get a new gasket for your EGR valve, take it off and look down in the small hole. Some intake cleaner and a piece of bicycle cable in your drill cleans it out well. Sometimes the port will get so clogged that it sets a code for insufficient EGR flow.
well no such luck
plugs looked like theyd been in there awhile but they werent fouled or damaged in any way, they were bosch platinums (i wonder if thats why i get that stupid noise through my radio, cause i was blaming my fuel pump)
oh yea what is with those things theres 8 of them and they arent real nice to get to it took me for ever and i skipped a few of them.
pulled the egr and it appeard clean juced with cleaner anyways
so i guess ill do a fuel pressure check i just gotta get a gauge
