Hey guys, it's been a long time but I finally got the ambition to swap my junked C6 in for a NP435... But after doing the swap I have a growling noise in the the tranny in 3rd gear... I'm not sure of the gear oil level b/c I haven't gotten it checked yet... I should have. I was wondering if a low level would cause this, or would it happen in all gears. Another curiosity question is what would it damage if it were ran on a low level of lube... not for a very extended amount of time though. But all in all I think I'm going to love the new 4spd I've wanted to do this every since I got the truck about 3 years ago.
Usually the first thing to go bad on one that has been run low of oil, Is the front bearings on the input shaft. Oil starvation works it's way from front to the back, As far as damage caused anyway. This is a fairly simple gearbox to work on, even for a novice. In most cases all you need is a small parts kit to fix them this includes all seals, gaskets and bearings.
by third gear are you saying top gear as in L-1-2-3 or 1-2-3-4 if it is secenerio 1 its probably main shaft bearings either the front(input) or rear(output) if it secenerio 2 its probably clluster bearings or an output bearing low lube will hurt your tranny
