Driveshaft:checking u-joints/yoke

Driveshaft:checking u-joints/yoke
I was under the truck Saturday checking my u-joints, or trying to. The u-joints all seem tight. I noticed no lateral movement at either joint. Am I checking correctly?
I did notice that where the yoke slides into the tranny extension (2WD), that I can push the drive shaft up and down and side to side. The movement I'm seeing is within the tranny, not at the u-joint itself. Should there be movement? I'd say total movement was 3/16 to 1/4", 3/32-1/8" each way from where it was sitting. This measurement was at the joint, but not within the joint..if that makes sense. I'm guessing those measurements, of course. Would this indicate a worn yoke? Can this cause vibration at highway speeds or just on take off? I do get a chatter on take offs, but I assumed this was my clutch. Sometimes, I'm a bad 2nd gear rolling stopper.
