No accessory position on key?

Hey guys,

I searched the forums but I am havign no luck.

I have a 94 Ford Ranger XL, 2wD 5 spd Standard 4.0L V6.

Seems my truck has no accessory position on the ignition. On most cars/trucks its usually back one from off, or forward once from off. All I have is forward once and I have my fuel pump on, and my driving lights come on. A hair mire forward and my usual "on" position kicks in. Next step forward after this is "start"...

There seems to be no other position available to me.

So here is my question, is there any way to bypass the driving lights (perhaps take a fuse out) so that I will be able to listen to music while camping without my driving lights on? Or is there something you guys have come upon as a solution to this?

Thanks for all help you send my way!

Chris

Hey Chris,
Don't know about a Ranger that far back on the accessory position but you may be able to rewire the head unit and bypass the switch.

When I dropped a new head unit into my truck, I didn't even bother with the acc switch. It is hot all the time. You will need to find the power lead on the head unit (if stock, not sure how to locate that easily) and reroute it. You can tie into a fuse for an item that is always on, and no more need for key in the ignition to listen to the radio.

Also reduces the risk of locking the keys in, and no door dinging noise.

Thanks for the advice. I was thinking of something along those lines anyhow.

Just gotta be careful to have the deck off, or the faceplate removed when its not in use to save the battery.

My 93 an 96 both have an that position. You have to push in on the key and lock while you are turning it toward you or to the left. Opposite than starting the truck.
My 96 seems to have a real problem doing this also, but a little wiggling and it does go back.

Sounds like a bad ignition switch (not the lock cylinder) to me.

My 94 Ranger XL, 2.3 L, manual 5 spd has the ignition accessory position in the regular place (turning the key back towards the driver). No need to push in the little locking button, the key just turns right back.

Thanks!

Well it seems I found what was up, yes I do have an accessory position, it seems the key is just too worn out to turn the tumbler easily. I have a spare which is in much better shape but the loop the key would have to be held by a ring has broken off.

Time for a new key it seems.

Hey thanks a bunch everyone!
