Warn winch having problems..please help

I got my truck stuck last night pretty bad. Call a friend who has a warn winch 8000xi (I think this is the name). Well he had to pull me a pretty good distance. After pulling me about 10 feet his winch started to get hot. We let it cool for about 30 minutes then tried again. It seemed weaker and only pulled me a couple of feet this time and it was HOT! I told him I would call someboby else and not to tear up his winch. We unhooked it from my truck and the winch will not pull the cable in. It will just click. The motor will turn backwards letting the cable out fine. It just clicks when you are trying to let the cable in and it doesn't turn over or anything? This happened last night and he has tried it today with the same problem. We also tried a different remote. Anyone have any idea what is wrong.;

sounds like the most typlical problem in any electrical item. Bad connections. Check everything over. I was using my buddy's xd9000 and we stalled it. Never even got warm. You could hold your hand on the motor.

either you burnt the motor up (not really that big of a deal) or like jopey said your connections are bad. that clicking noise is the same noise you hear when trying to crank a truck and the battery is dead...means it ain't getting enough juice!

If the connections are bad would the motor still work in reverse letting the cable out? It only click when trying to pull the cable back in.

yes b/c there are different connections... one for reall out and one for reel in. on my 8274 there are 4 solenoids that could go bad or could have a loose connection. open up the electrical box and scope out any loose wires (jiggle'em).

My "junk" Ramsey has started doing the same thing, but no click. The hand switch on the end of the plug in cable is bad. Whats next with my piece of junk ?

I burned the motor up on a Warn 8000 the same way. It worked great on my 86 Ranger, but the first real stuck on a 3/4 ton truck just burned it up in seconds. It ain't supposed to get hot!!!

Thanks Fish now I've got something else to look forward too
One thing I have learned is to always use a ****** block on anything, no sence in adding any more stress to the old girl than necessary.

sorry man... i only speak from experience! the best thing to do is be VERY careful about non-straight line pulls. don't let the cable bundle up on one side. trust me, that pot metal case doesnt hold up all that well, lol
