Never been much of a Garth fan. In my book Merle Haggard is and will always be the best.
Also love the tunes of Johnny Horton, Jimmy Rogers and Patsy Kline.
And lets not forget Hank Sr., Jr. and III. Unfortunately Hank III doesn't have but one CD out. Believe he's too country for the new fangled country (pop) fans.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 28-Nov-01 AT 02:31 AM (EST)]I was watching the Jay Leno show awhile ago and I heard that he had to do his new album because he already had signed a contract before he retired. So it won't surprise me if he retires again soon. His concerts are the best. I went to his concert in the year he retired. What amazed me is he did nine sold out shows in row in Minnesota. What ever happened to David Lee Murphy? I love that song, "Little Dust on the Bottle."
I liked Garth until he went to that "Chris Gaines" thing a year or two ago where he put out a CD of light rock under that name....Ever since then i can't respect him as much as a country singer.
I think Garths record sells on his new albums will reflect what hardcore country fans think of him now. Hes not really what kind of country I like anymore. Like one of ya said Montgomery Gentry now thats good county music. Others I like are Mark Chesnutt, Travis Tritt, Gary Allan, and Alabama. Somebody I didnt like at first was Brad Paisley. I thought he was just another one of those girlish type performers, but has really proved himself. Some of the stuff coming out of Nashville this days is not fit for the trashcan. Just my 2.
Well Ya'll, you all had good points, I beleive country isnt what is once was, and I dont care that Shania and Faith and even the Dixie Chicks are on pop stations... it pisses me off that they call themselves country but oh well.
Chris Ledoux is also another favorite of mine, George strait I think is overrated, his old stuff was awesome but then like garth his new albums went down.... maybe they were trying to conform? Who knows, Brad Paisley has a very country sound to like Montgomery Gentry... and I love hte old country, Shelly West, Donna Fargo, Hank Williams (Sr,Jr and 3rd) Charlie Daniels.... great drving tunes, but hey, I do love ACDC too.... Im just a rocking angel :P TTYL
What is this carrying on between Garth and Trisha ? When you watch Garth play you can see where his wedding ring USED to be. I can't have any respect for someone who, merely because they are commercially successful, feels the need to trade in their spouse for a younger/prettyier model. What happened to integrity ? No more Garth/gaines records for my house. DF
