I Hate Cliche's

Just got back from a funeral for an in-law family member (my daughter-in-law's grandmother), and what I noticed was how prevalent those old cliche's were. Seems like everyone was saying things like "she looks so peaceful" and "It's too bad something like this has to happen to bring the family together"...

I don't know why, but hearing these cliche's thrown around like that really bugged me. I felt like getting everyone's attention and hollering, "Can't you people come up with something original to say?"! I've seen the same thing at weddings and other events too. I don't know why it bothered me so much today - I mean I didn't know the grandmother...I was there more for moral support of my daughter-in-law, but hearing this idle chatter and the phony emotions behind it just stuck in my craw.

I understand that it's hard for some people to know what to say to a grieving family. And I know that they want to say something meaningful. But repeating the same bland statement "I'm sorry for your loss." is not the way to go about it. Think for a minute and come up with something original, something personal- not something you read off a Hallmark card!

Ok rant over. Sorry folks.

I really hate funerals and I try hard to avoid them. The whole idea of a traditional funeral is silly to me. I have no desire to have a stranger drain out all my body fluids and pump in chemicals, then dress me and put makeup on me so I look "natural". The truth is I would not look natural, I would look dead. I have left detailed instructions regarding what to do with this body (beautiful as it is) when I am through with it, and they don't include a group of mournful people exchanging clichés.

Cliche's that really bother me to no end are those sports people that say things like :
"the guys who really get things going are the Wayne Gretzky's, Lanny McDonald's, Steve Yserman's,Ken Gilmour's "

Excuse me Mr, sport's announcer but these GUYS are " One of a Kind ".

Instead ,Why can't you say it like this:
The GUYS who can really gets things going for a team are Players that can be just as effective as a guy like Wayne Greztky,Lanny Mac, Steve Yserman or Kenny Gilmore has been over the years.
