I have a 1991 F-150 with a 5.0 engine. The block is from a 97 Explorer. I'm only using the block assembly. I'm using the 91 heads and intake and front cover and water pump. What I need to know is probably so simple I am overthinking it. I need to install the distributor in place of the timing pickup the Explorer had in it's place. I know to get the engine to TDC on cylinder #1. What I need to know is how do I determine if I have TDC on the intake stroke or the exhaust stroke? Would just having the timing mark on the harmonic dampener on the top side of it's travel get me close enough? (I can figure out where #1 cylinder is in the distributor and drop it in accordingly if my thinking is correct on the timing mark.) Now you see why I have a feeling I am overthinking it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
mark the position the dizzy is in now, and where the rotor is pointing and drop the new dizzy in the same spot........rotor will point to same spot on new dizzy as old....
check timing when done to make up for small any amounts you were off.

or are you asking how to do it on a motor you are building?
If you are on the compression stroke for #1 cylinder you will feel the air blowing out of the spark plug hole as the piston comes up. If the valve covers are off, you can watch the valves on #1, if the exhaust is opening as the piston comes up, then you need to go around one more time. Both valves should be closed as the piston comes up, this is the TDC compression stroke.

I'm replacing the cam position sensor...it goes in the later model engines in place of a distributor. So, there is no rotor. I'm also working on it by myself, which makes turning it over AND feeling for compression a real problem. I guess I'll have to find somebody to lend a hand. Thanks.
