94 awd 98,000 miles. I've been smelling a hot oily smell(not real strong but definitely there) from the front right. Smell it best right by the wheel well. Only smells after a short drive. 2 or 3 miles. When I get off the highway, say 20 miles, no smell. Finally got under to look around today and saw dampness on the exhaust manifold bolt closest to the firewall on the drivers side and some "staining" on up the cylinder head a little ways. Again nothing serious but it's really there. No other symptoms. Doesn't use any oil between changes. Has never needed coolant added either. Any ideas?? Good. Bad. I have spring break plans and need help deciding if I should drive it from southern Oregon to southern Cal. pulling my tent trailer or alter plans. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated!!
Leaky heads usually does not leak oil out the side like that. What you described sounds like a valve cover gasket leak. Much less expensive and much easier to deal with. If it's really cylinder heads, the van would overheat and uses coolant, sometimes lots of coolant.
If it's just a leaky valve cover gasket, keep on driving and watch your oil between gas stops. You should be safe. 98,000 miles is very young for a modern car.
It's funny your Spring Break plan is going from Oregon to Southern CA. Mine is the opposite way
Thanks for the heads up "copper". I've got many years of automotive under-hood time under my belt but am new to aerostars and their ideosyncracies(sp). Love the rig. I still need to get air shocks to suppport the sagging rear (the car's, not mine) and I'm ready to roll. My wife suggests we meet half way and swap cars so they can stay close to home in case of trouble. We're in Klamath Falls and go to So Cal to visit family (I'm the "black sheep" who moved away) once a year. Again, thanks
Ah, I remember. Halfway up the mountain on the way to Klamath Falls, there was an old WWII observation post disguised as a farm house. It was used to watch for the Japanese invasion which never came.
