I have a 95 F-150 with the venerable 4.9L, 5 spd. 2WD, short box with 103k on it. Wonderful truck. Hate to get rid of it, but I am looking to upgrade my boat within the next few years and will need something to tow her. I have been looking at a 1996 F-350 7.3L PSD 4X4 long box. What kind of mileage could I expect from this vehicle as a daily driver? I'm averaging about 14.9 now, mostly highway, with some city thrown in for good measure. Are there mods for such an older diesel or something cost effective to improve mileage? I am interested in a 4X4 because I have returned to snowmobiling and have almost gotten stuck twice.
I had a 96 two wheeler, extended cab, long bed, 7.3 and pulled a 34' fiver, total weight for truck and trailer was just over 19,000.
I got around 9 MPG towing and between 17 - 19 MPG solo with mistly freeway driving.
My 94 psd is getting 11-12 towing horse trailers+3-4 horses. Getting 17-19 highway unloaded. I have seen as high as 21 but that was all driving about 55mph and real easy.
I have a 96 4x4 F350 reg. cab long bed 5 sp. manual that gets 19-20 mpg. I tow an 18' aluminum boat with it about 1800# and the mpg is not much worse. I used to have an 86 ext. cab 4x4 with the 5.0 4 speed manual and the difference between the two is like night and day but anything would beat the tow vehicle I used before that, it was a 92 s-10 2wd chevy with a 2.8 V6 5 speed. There is a lake in the mountains 20 mi. from my house and it was 2nd gear up over the summit 20 mph and 55 down the back side hoping a deer didn't step out in front of me that misunderstood the laws of physics. I love the powerstroke and and am pretty sure you will too!
I'm still not sure about the purchase and may have a hard sell to the wife, but your input help will my case. Are there any performance mods that your know of for the older PSD's? How different are they from the newer generations? Clearly I'm not up on my diesels, yet.

Their are plenty of upgrades for the early PSD's.
Most are similar to the newer trucks
