Hey guys, im prob gonna get a 91' F150 4X4 with a 302 and its a shortbed. The only problem with it is some rust. The gas tank has rusted through on the top so you cant fill the gas past like 1/3 or else it leaks. Where should i go to get a new tank? How much will it cost? Any ideas are appreciated. Also, the fenders on the rear of the truck have a pretty good amount or rust on them, but not way too much. There is no rust on the front. Im only gonna have like 500 left over after i buy it. So i need to definatley get a new tank and possibally fix the rust. How should i go about fixing the rust in the first place, i dont care if your ideas are cheap or expensive, just tell me them all plaease. Thanks a lot.
Jonathan
Try J.C. Whitney for the replacement gas tank. I have no idea how much. The catalouge is $3.95. You could find a replacement bed or put a flat bed on it. Look through Bargin Trader. Sometimes they have beds for different trucks. Salvage yards or private individuals are another option.
The gas tank should be your first priority, as long as the bed isn't falling off. I would not drive anything that leaks gas.
My J.C. Whitney catalog (you can order from their web site and I think you can still get free catalogs) says you can get a steel replacement tank with a 3-year warranty for your truck for $129.95 + shipping. An MTS (polyethylene) tank with a 5-year warranty is $169.95. Their web site is:

I would sure check discount auto parts store before doing a catalog order. Even paying sales tax, you might save a bundle on shipping for something the size of a gas tank.
While we're discussing rust, I've noticed some underneath my '94. I suspect the previous owner did some driving down on the coast. Is there anything a guy can do to make sure the rust doesn't go any farther?
The gas tank is not a big deal. Me and my bud just put one in his 82 F250 4x4 and it wasn't that hard. It was out of my parts truck so when we got it out we through a couple coats of rust paint on it and haven't had a problem yet. I brand new one from Canadian tire is about $130 and then another $100 to install (reminder these are in canadian prices). As for the fenders you can get them for about $60 canadian each. If you can weld then they will go in fine but if not you will be payin about $200 for a crappy job. I hope this helps you out.
I would def go with the polyethylene plastic tank...no worries about rust. as for your rust situation, you could do some bondo work if it's not too too bad. I did on my F250 around the rear wheel fenders, and the good thing about bondo is it is pretty durable to a point, plus you can mold it to look just like the fender without worrying about welding or anything. just remember to cover it right away with primer. As for underbody rust, there is actually a spray paint you can buy for under $5 at any auto shop. i forget the name, but it's something like undercarraige rust inhibitor. it's a black paint that has a plastic attribute to it. it goes on easy and cleans up quick, and it looks good. i did my whole chassis with it and it looks <brand new>, well almost, considering it's an 86 F250 4x4 that is used mostly for offroad!
