Howdy ya'll, here's the deal. The truck is an '87 F-150 ext. cab long bed with dual tanks. I'm having trouble with the fuel lines. I took a peak up underneath the truck and it looks like maybe the original owner may have tried to rig the two tanks to siphon at the same time instead of having to switch between tanks. It's a mess down there.
Anyway, when you turn the ignition key, there is no life from the fuel pump. That is, the fuel pump makes no noise, like it's not turning on. Eventually the engine will start, and the truck runs fine, but if you shut it down and try to restart it will take another 5 minutes of trying before it fires up.
Am I going to have to take the entire fuel system apart and make it stock again to get it to work? It's really bugging me.
Thanks for ya'lls help.
Ben
it's not building pressure fast enough or seems a s though it's not holding pressure either. I believe there is a check valve somewhere, maybe on the fuel pump/sending unit assy. Check that and also check the fuel press regulator. If it doesn't seat properly it would allow the fuel pressure to bleed off back into the tank, and also cause it to take longer to build pressure.
My '87 F-150 did sort of the same thing a few years ago. It would crank fine, but refused to start, then for no reason it would start just fine. Turned out it was the fuel pump relay, and it was like $12 to fix. I have a 300, and mine was a little gray box that plugs into some kind of housing on the driver's side of the engine bay, between the firewall and fender. (There are two relays that look the same, I think one is for the ignition. Easy to tell which is which, just pull one and see if it will try to crank.) I would try that first, since it's cheap and easy. Apparently it is intermittant for a while and then quits alltogether. Good luck.
