1983 was the first model year for the Ranger. 108,196 were sold in 1982. 143,100 were sold in 1983. But the actual model year for both was 1983. The diesel engine is an inline 4-cylinder with a bore of 3.5 and stroke of 3.5. 2.2 liter displacement. Net horsepower was 59 at 4000 RPM's and net torque was 90 pound feet at 2500 RPM's. I, personally, have never seen a factory diesel Ranger. I would think they are fairly rare. Is this also an International Harvester engine?
They were both built by Mazda. The diesel engine is a Mazda, but I believe they were built by Isuzu. The Mazda B2200 (which was the diesel version of the b2000) was built from 80-84.
I'd agree that a diesel Ranger is a fairly rare beast, I know it's hard to find a Diesel B2200. I've been keeping my eyes open for one for about 8 years now, and haven't seen one up here in the northwoods. My 84 B2000 is about a tuff a little truck as you could find, cept for the 5 spd tranny. So I'd love to find a diesel one also, which had larger bearings/shafts in the tranny.

Must be rare...If you here about anyone that knows how to find out about my diesel let me know.
A diesel Ranger is a new one on me. Bought a '83 new, 2.9 gas---there was no diesel option that I saw or read about then or since!! Are you sure it isn't imported from outside the US. The US makes "export only" vehicles that we usually never know about unless they are imported back "used" at a later date. Even then, they sometimes have to be imported back as parts or in "pieces" and not a whole vehicle to avoid emissions and safety regs. then reassembled.
Also are you sure that it is not a conversion such as that Mazda diesel. It could be something like the Centurion or a Quigley conversion. It could be a one of a kind. Look for any unusual ID plates. Could be a Ford prototype that got away. Detriot frequently crushes prototypes.
Where do you/how do you get air and fuel filters for it, etc??
Anyway to post pictures. Someone might recognize the engine.
I am quite sure it was the V6 2.8 or 2.9. Anyway it was a p.o.s. In the shop 16 times in the one and only year I had it. Too bad the lemon law was not born by then in CA. But--I still like Fords. It was a Monday "hang-over" production vehicle. Build date proved that theory.

i've been looking for one ever since i first heard about them. bet it's pretty rare - i've seen one (confirmed) on the road in the last year - & i pay attention.
i do believe mazda made the engines for the first few years, then they switched over to mitsubishi. production ended '97ish, i think.
what kind of mileage do you get out of that thing anyway?
cetane - it was a full production model, something like '83 - '86,7,8... just not very popular. if you're old enough to have bought an '83 new, then you must remember how rare diesels in general were back then... certainly not as accepted as nowadays.
1983 i got my driver's license / dad had a nissan wagon & a buddies dad had vw rabbit & vw 'truck' - i can still remember the few stations in town that we could fill up.
I've got a friend who's had about 5 of them. He refused one offered to him about a year ago for $1200. It had AC and was REAL clean. It guy who ended up with it didn't change the oil properly and fried the engine. So my friend just bought it from that guy for $150 and he's got another engine to put in it.
He uses them to haul tools from farm to farm. Drives nothing else! Whops, he also has an S-10 with a diesel and it's an extended cab.
In 83 Ford started putting diesels in everything. I've got an '85 Tempo with a 2.0 Mazda diesel/5 spd. It's slow but gets around 38 mpg driving it like you're mad at it. My Grandmother has an '84 Escort with the same setup, she can pull 50 mpg with it. She also has an '84 Lincoln mk VII with a straight 6, turbo'd, BMW diesel and ZF 4 speed auto. She scares everyone at the pumps, "Hey lady! Don't put diesel in that car!"
