1973 Ford F100 Handling Issue
I have a 1973 F100 2WD 390, PS, PB, AC. The truck is all over the road when I drive it. The PS is easy to turn. I've checked the front end and everything is tight yet when I drive it the front end just seems to want to go all over the place. I've kinda gotten used to it and I think these trucks didn't handle all that well but now I'm in the middle of a restoration and I'd like to fix the issue. Any Ideas?

Rag joint.
Check the coupling between the steering column and the steering box. There should be a fiber disk in the middle of that joint. Over time it disintegrates and falls out. Then the coupling is free and the only thing keeping it working is the safety pins. But the safty pins allow about an inch of wheel travel before you move the steering gear. Replacing the joint is pretty easy. Do a search in this forum.

check everything twice even three times over for looseness and such....has it had any new steering parts put on at all??? i just changed out my draglinks, tie rod ends, rag joint and all that, when i got done it pulled right a bit, so i adjusted it more, but i did it wrong and ended up with a bit of toe out in the front, it had me ALL over the road worse than before i started....a friend helped me measure from rotor to rotor, front and back of each rotor, and gave it 1/8" toe in on the front, now it drives like a new truck straight down the road.....might not be your problem, but if nothing else seems bad, you might take off the front wheels and measure just to make sure.....

on top of the steering box is a set screw, ihad the same problem on my 77 f250.i loosened the lock nut then tightened the screw till i felt a little pressure then backed it out a 1/2 turn and tightened the lock nut down again, make sure your steering is dead center before you do this.and dont turn the screw too far you could damage the p/s box . it worked for me good luck
you should do a search for the steering box set screw first get some more input but my truck was all over the place too and someone hear told me this and now my steering is nice and tight...
