I would be suprised if ANY new engines do NOT have a knock sensor... I believe it's almost a requirement nowdays...
My understanding of Pinging:
it's detontation from too early firing before the piston gets to the right point before TDC.
If you HEAR it, it's been sub-audible even longer....
and any prolonged pinging is not a good thing for your bottom end since the piston is still coming up and the firing is trying to force it down...
I would follow up with your dealer and press him a bit more, maybe go to another dealer if possible...
If it does not state Premium fuel is required, than you should be able to run on regular... and not waste the money on premium...
A couple of things YOU could try...
get a bottle or two of RXP - have had good results with it "cleaning" out some grunge... and bringing back performance...
And please don't compain about it getting into higher gears early !
THAT was my biggest complaint about my 02 7.3L 4 speed X !!!
it would "hang" in a lower gear until I got above 45 or so even if I was coasting, much less accelerating easily...
HECK, it had GOBS of torque down low... USE it !!!
