On my 79 F250 CC 4x4, the turning radius is extremly diffrent from one side to the other. It turns great to the left but to the right it turns like a tank. I thought it was the stabiler shock but it seems to be mounted right. Any help here is appreciated.
Thanks
JC
Jack up the front end and check travel both ways. It may be a PS box that has a twisted shaft. This is common after an accident. The insurance companies will not replace the box.
Like Torque said,I'd check the sector shaft first. If the truck has been lifted I've seen this happen if the steering arm (at the left knuckle) wasn't changed.
maybe the steering box has been worked on and when the pitman arm was reinstalled, the steeing box wasn't centered.
do you have equal # of turns from center line to left and from center to right?
No, it turns more to the left than to the right, the steering wheel that is.
SO can I take the pitman arm off and adjust the steering to middle and reattach?
I think the shaft on the steering box has a portion that is not splined and it fits into the pitman arm in an area that also has no splines. Short answer is the pitman arm only goes on one way. At least on mine it's that way.
If the truck was lifted improperly, there may not be enough drop in the pitman arm to give equal steering travel in both direction. I had this happen to me. When I bought my truck it turned on a dime to the right, but like a bull dozer to the left. The previous owner lifted the truck, but used the stock pitman arm. So my components were binding. I bought an aftermarket pitman arm with the appropriate drop and the problem went away. Just a thought...
Zags sound right (a dropped pitman arm, a dropped drag link or and steering arm block)
if your drag link is worn out get that, if not i would get a drop pitman arm, they are cheaper than the block kit, your drag link should sit horizontal, if not measure the difference from horizontal and that is the amount you need to compensate
