Power Steering

Has anybody ever done a powersteering swap on a 65 (ish) 4x4. I either have to get my 65 sold or have to modify it to do trails with. I have done a bunch of research on this site, but I was hoping for some "local" advice. After this weekend I am hooked, and want to back to tuttle creek very soon, without tearing up my wife's good truck. (again)

What kind of axle and unit does it have at present. On the older straight axle trucks a lot of folks use a toyota ps unit with a pitman from one of the after market places. That is what I plan on using on the 54. I Have the toyota unit, but have not gotten it installed. I will have to fab a mounting bracket for the steering box.

I don't know what axel it has (Normal 4x4?) How can I tell?
Fabrication is very very easy for me- I have a guy that is a good friend that owns a metal machine shop. He can make anything! I guess I have to get a toyota gear box. (or 2 as I would like to try this on the other truck as well.) If we can get anyone else interested, maybe a mod party for power steering????

Before you go the toyota route, you might want to post the question on the 61-66 truck forum site. There are probably a number of folks there that have tackled your specific truck and the power steering issue. Also do a search on that forum and there are probably a number of threads at that forum on power steering installs. Let us know what you find.

No bribe needed. Just what are you planning? Maybe we could do a mod party up in north central KS. I would come. Probably several others too.

Well,
I thought that since I have the front clip off the 62, I would add power steering.
I also thought about putting power steering on the 65 to make a rock crawler, but after a few posts, and research I found out that carberated engines will stall if the incline is too great... So I'm just planning on addin PS on the 62 for now.

Flip that can be a problem. I have sen many rock crawlers with carbed motors but on steep inclines it is easy to lose fuel to the motor. The bowl floats don't work very well when standing straight up. LOL

I think it was Demon carbs that had carbs for crawlers. You might check into that.

Or you can put a inline check valve to keep enough fuel to your carb might be a bit cheaper.

Hey Flip and Thomas, how hard would it be to convert my old 54 F250 to 4X4? I already have a Dana 60 in the rear and a 460 up front. Then I could both cruise and crawl with it. Just an idea I've been kicking around since going up to Tuttle.

I doubt the 54 would be much differnt then my 65??? Over all I mean. I have been doing alot of reading in the 60's forum. I have a pretty good idea of what I am going to do I think. I need to gather the parts and make it happen. :-) I am going to start on the 62 and see how that goes... its just a 2wd, but it will get me a good idea of what I need to do.

Yes i believe making your 54 into a 4x4 can be done easley back then they were set up to do that if necessarley and yes a small check valve on the fuel line will keep the fuel from flowing back from the carb.
