This morning on my way into town I noticed my truck surging and acting funny, along with a rapid clicking noise in the cab. Figured out it was the EEC relay clicking on and off. I checked for loose wires, etc., didn't find anything. It acted fine this afternoon. Could this just be the relay going bad? Or maybe a wiring problem, or even the computer?
OK, I looked at the wiring diagrams, and it about has to be either the wiring or the relay itself, not the computer. Make sense?
Sure looks like that to me, computer doesn't even come into the energizing of the EEC relay.
Since the relay is "chattering" check the ground and the 12 volt power wires for the coil of the relay. Make sure the relay is tight in its socket.
Could be the relay failing and a remote chance it is the ignition switch contacts for the run position.
Good luck.
Ford had a lot of trouble with ignition switches during that time frame. Check and see if the two halfs of the switch have seperated. If so replace the switch.
Ya, I'd check the relay. I had a problem with mine in an 88 F150. But it was a matter of the truck stalling and not being able to start it for 10-15 minutes...then everything would be fine...for a while....Took 2 dealers, who knows how many hours and close to a $800 to find the problem....Good luck!
