I have a 77 highboy crewcab with the low pinion D60. the factory hydro assist works great. The difference between our axles and a 78-79 is that ours have low pinions and are corse 19 splined inner and outer axleshafts. The high pinions have 30 spline inners, but I'm not sure about the outers. The corse splined axle shafts are weaker, but can be changed out with different spider gears and inner shafts. If you're going to the trouble, might as well go chromo and upgrade to 35 spline inner and outer shafts, plus hubs or flanges... but then you'd have about a grand in to it, not have a high pinion axle, and still have to do a bunch of fab work with a different steering box to go super big and run crossover steering. A grand is also leaving out re-gearing. This has been one of my mind's troubles since I picked her up last month. Upgrade the axle I have now, or splurge on a high pinion to build up ultra beefy and then.... on to steering.
Hey Renopowers, I never said the "C" word in here But check out a 44 front axle on a chevy truck or blazer. The caliper mounting bracket IS the backing plate and know for fact they will bolt right on a jeep dana 30 or 44. Sorry guys for the C word, just wanted to help.
i used spindle outers from a hd44 and installed it on a high pinion reg 44 to make a high pinion hd 44 for my high boy(u can do the same thing to the 1/4 ton 44's
How tough of a job would this be? I have a 44 low pinion donor and would like to put the bigger hubs on. Also does anyone know if the axle shafts would be the same on the low an hi pinion?
