I broke my front drive shaft . The truck is a 76 f150 with 20'' lift and dana 60 front dana 70 rear 205 case and 4spd with 600hp I finally got it all together but the tires 33's for now I had it out this weekend in the yard still covered with 3-4'' snow and it broke. I was only moving it to the garage and wasn't really getting on it when it happened . The front shaft started clanging around under there. From the looks of it the snap ring came out and it flew apart / it came apart at the axle and the one cap was still in and the other is in the yard somewhere . to me it seems the snap ring was defective or not in right and the cap came out while driving . Is there anything else that could have caused this any suggestions would be helpful
ahh yes, i have broken 4 front driveshafts in the past week so i know how you feel.
i have found that the snap rings don't always do a good job holding the caps in so i always tack weld the caps in. i tack them in 12, 3, 6, and 9 o'clock positions. i havce yet to have a cap come out.
yea it sounds like the cap worked itself out which created slop in the shaft. then with the extra slop it worked itself loose from there until it finally gave way

Isn't that the shaft you paid $2K for? If so I'd be on the phone pronto. I've seen several people do what Fishy suggested and tack the caps in place. I don't like this because it friggin blows rod when you need to remove the U-joint and it also tends to back things in the cap if you put too much heat on it. It can be done but I'd prefer not to. Make sure the clip is in place properly and seated all the way in the groove. If it is you shouldn't have any problems with it coming out. There's really very little pressure on those clips.
Yeah i would be calling the guys you got that shaft from and see what the deal is, and i assume you haven't done a whole lot of driving on it either since you've had it.
There are many people who manufacture double cv driveshafts. Highangle driveline, Jess the owner is a pretty cool guy and very helpfull. Also the driveshaft superstore is another the guy to talk to there is Oscar. Both places have web sites and both can build any configuration you want. But be prepared, they will empty your wallet.
RubberDuck
P.S. There's a guy in texas that can build them, but he doesn't know what the heck he's doing. Right Ivan?

I still need to put that together . . . I just haven't had the time to go pick up another CV. That yoke will work perfect though, maybe tomorrow morning I'll have time to get it all together. Just kind of bummed that the slip CV I had didn't fit right.
514 doesn't need a new driveshaft, he just bought one:
hey i had the same prob with mine with 20 '' lift it ended up at like 40 deg . I left the pinion at stock angle and the same wuth the t-case and got a drive shaft made from arizona drivelines called the bad boy 80deg cv it has double cv on both ends and a long slip yoke with flanges at axle and t-case . It was very $$$ but what the heck its not locked in all the time and figgure i will never need another one . oh btw it is now where near maxed out on mine and like i said im at like 40deg .
That's what I was talking about. He just paid $2K for that setup so why not have them fix it?
man you guys are tearing me up well the place i bought it from was the driveshaft super store and it was oscar that i talked to talked to him today and he says he wasnt in the shop and to call tomorrow I know i will prob get the run around on this deal so as for now if anybody else wants to buy from them you all can tell them about me . Maybe i can just get new univesial joints and be good doesnt look liked it hurt anything else and see if it does it again (or maybe i have been had )by oscar but will be calling and ill let you all know how i make out and will get some pics up this week for you all to see it although its not on the truck its laying in pieces in the garage
