Just bought a 48 f-3 dump truck, I would like to get rid of the old 2pc. death wheels. I have had a real hard time finding vintage looking wheels that will still allow the old hubcaps to fit and still have the same 8 lug pattern. any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Cotgreave
I read a reply you had in another post, I thought it was odd that you had 5 lugs. The wheels I have (17x5) I thought were safer than the ones with the lock rings, but my wheel guy (who will still mount them) said the 2 pc are super dangerous, he would only fill the new tires to 15 lbs. then have me bolt them to the truck then fill them the rest of the way up. that way if they explode they wouldn't go anywhere. Sounded too sketchy to me. Hey if anyone wants these old wheels ( I have 5 ) let me know.
You can check with Stockton Wheel in calif. to see if they make wheels to take the early style caps. There's nothing that's OEM that takes those caps other than what you have now. Most tire shops won't do the old rims because of insurance regulations and the safety factor. Your 8 lug rims have a 6.5 bolt circle, Reamer's are a 5 lug 8" bolt circle. Totally different rim. They stopped using 17" rims on the smaller trucks in 1966. That was also the last year for the pop in style hubcaps. You can find late style rims that will fit, without a problem, other than the early hubcaps won't fit. Reamer's in a whole different bag. His style rims stopped in late 50's and they stopped with the 8" bolt pattern in 1964. Check with Stockton, they may be able to make a custom set for you.
I believe Stockton Wheel can build replacements that will appear stock but will be one-piece. Also, I remember previous posts here about using later-model 16" one-piece rims. Try a search on that. I don't know if either option will allow the original hubcaps...
You could also go with the one piece 16" wheels from the F-2, they use the same hubcaps. There's not much difference in size and you should be able to find a set in an older bone yard.
Stockton can do the 8- bolt F-3's
But they can't do anything for us 5 lug, deep tub F-5 guty.
According to the Stockton rep I talked with, The problem with the F-4 to 8's is the depth of the tub on the rim. They can't get them from anyone.
Right now they say MAYBE in a few months they will have replacements for the deep tubs through another manufacturer.
Lucky for me Chuck at Chuck's Trucks located Solid rims for me in the 5 lug pattern!
Check with a machine shop to see if they'll cut and reweld the centers to new rims...should be doable. Once you find a place that will do the work, you'll just have to locate the proper wheels.
I have the 17" x 6 rims with the 8 bolt x 6.50 bc too. I have had very little luck finding anything with a similar offset either. There are 16" 8 bolt steel rims out there off the shelf but they do not allow you to use the same old hubcaps. Let me know if you find anything too!
hey reamer I'm in West by god Virginia, still no luck with my wheels, stockton can only cut and reweld my wheels. So I'd have to ship them to Cali. Do I really like the old hubcaps that much?
