Windshield install problems

I took my 79 down last week to get a new windshield put in because of a large crack. The shop is a good place and they have done good work for us before. I dropped it off before school and said it would be ready when i got out. I had a friend take me by after school and the guy said that that windshield wouldnt fit so they would have to shave about 3/16 off of it to make it fit. He said that the cab had "settled" and he said it was a common problem on 67-72 chevies although he had never seen it on a Ford. I go back the next day and they had it it, but the gasket didnt fit right and they needed to put a new one in. I took the truck home over the weekend and took it back today so they can put a new gasket it. Hopefully i will get it back tommorow. Is this a common problem or am i just unlucky? The cab has never been damaged. Mabey the windshield was the wrong size and the cab is not "settled"? The shop that is doing the work has been really good about it and they are trying to make it right. Your thoughts would be appreciated.

67-72 chevys

I have had several, looked at thousands and am a member of an extremely active bulletin board just for the 67-72 chevys and have never heard of cab settling. I guess I could imagine a small amount of twist in accident, light roll over or heavy 4x4ing. The thing I see most is poor quality rubber and maybe glass itself.

I had a rougher time getting my rear slider in my truck than getting the windsheild in (with help) but i reused my original windsheild but i was using bronco graveyard weather stripping.

I have never heard of this, I think they messed it up and gave you a line of *^*^* to cover a mistake.

maybe this will help

I don't know what the problem might be but i have put several windshields in my 78-79's i live in mississppi so if you don't have a cracked windshield you don't drive your truck, but anyhow i wet everything down with rubbing alcohol they are a bit tight going in but this trick usually makes it a one man install. i hope this helps

Hopefully they will have the gasket tomorrow. I have heard that aftermarket weatherstripping doesnt fit right sometimes. I think this may be the case in my situation. I will have to see where they ordered the weatherstrip from.

It sounds like what you have there is a glass shop employee that is unfamiliar with the automotive glass business. Your windshield is one of the easiest types to install when proper intallation techniques are used. I really doubt any glass was shaved off of the windshield that was installed in your truck. That is a very risky procedure. I supposed they could have wet sanded some off with a belt sander, but it would have taken a while.
Anyway, If they did actually shave off the glass to install, then they voided the warranty by the manufacturer. If somehow there is a small fracture in the edge of that windhield, it'll probably show up later. I really don't see you getting a new windshield under any warranty then. So beware.

Just called a buddy of mine who has been in auto glass business for 30+ years, he has never heard of a cab settling on any vehicle, unless its been in a major wreck. He says that it was probably a cheap piece of off shore glass, or defective glass, ( wrong finished dimensions) or a tech who didnt know what he was doing.

He did my glass, with a new gasket/seal, in 20 minutes flat. Says this style is the easiest of them all to do.

They finally got it right today. I dont know what they did different, but it's in there now. They broke the windshield on wednesday so that's why it took so long. I cant complain though, because i got it for free.
