If you don't have both original keys, you can't program a spare so the dealer has to do it.

When I locked myself out of my 01 (Duh, knew I did it immediately too) the locksmith was able to make a spare for the doors only. The ignition keys have a transponder in them for the theft deterent system. Try your local autozone I know they sell oem remotes maybe they can do transponder keys also.

Yes it is true. The newer vehicles have a "security" chip embedded into the head of the key. When you insert it into the ignition, the vehicle "reads" the code in the chip and determines if it belongs to the vehicle. That decides whether or not your truck will start. A replacement from the dealer will consist of the key, and then the programming so your truck will allow the new key to start it. You can get another cut for it just about anywhere, but it will only unlock your doors, it will not start the truck.

If you do a search on this website, you should be able to find a post or two describing how to program a PATS key. HOWEVER, this only works if you already have 2 previously programmed keys in your possession. Once you pay out the nose to have the second key programmed at the dealer, buy a third key, have it cut, program it yourself, and keep it in a safe place. This will function as the "second" key in the event you lose one key and need to reprogram a new one.

If you have 2 masters you can buy and get someone to cut the extras, programming is easy as long as you have 2. If you have less than 2 the stealership or a locksmith with a programmer will have to do the job.

My 02 came with the two keys, I wanted a 3rd key and bought one from some guy on E-bay. It ended up costing like 13 bucks. I then took the key to Hope Depot and they ground it for free. It works perfectly after programming it. It's in the owners manual on how to do it. You put the first key in and turn it on for at least one second, Then you put the second original key in and turn it on for a second. Then you put in the new copied key and turn it on for at least a second. Turn it off and try to start the truck. If it starts then you were sucessful.

Yes it is but with the strength of these forums and the net people are getting educated and the dealerships are loosing a little. I HATE going to them but sometimes we have to.

I'm with you on that one Horseman...however, I did have a choice on my last purchase and decided to go with the dealer since their price was a little lower than the aftermarket, and it had a big FORD logo on the front. It was a storage compartment that goes under the back seat. Guess it depends on what you are buying.

Stealership

I have been working for car DEALERSHIPS for 26 years in parts.I take offense to your comments.Ive never stole anything in my life, and i dont like being called a thief.I help people in my job,and i sell quality parts, not stuff you get a lifetime warrany with but have to replace it every 2 months.

jayw,
It's not the people at the dealership it's the dealership it self. Not just Ford but all of them. If a person came in there with 2 master keys would the dealership allow you to sell a key, maybe cut it and tell the person how to program it their selves?
