Anybody else have one of these? I just bought one today and installed it. I must admit my acceleration HAS improved very noticeably. I was always skeptical about just adding an air filter that flows freely to gain hp or anything. The quality and stats compare pretty dang close to the stats on the higher priced models sitting next to it. Any comments?
A loooong time ago I tried one of those K&N Filter-Charger or something like that on my old hot rod Plymouth. I gotta say the idle speed did seem to go up just a wee bit but I figured any gains it provided in hp or mpg probably did not justify the extra cost. Been using stock air filters ever since.
Well, I already bought and installed the danged thing ... kind of a wild hair thing, but the acceleration does seem to be quicker. I'll have to check it out next time I'm leaving my friend's house. I always reach 70 mph just as I go past the first house down the highway, consistantly, so I'll have to check it out next time there. Probably a waste of money, but I thought I'd see what an air filter would do and then decide farther along if I want to smooth out the airflow more with one of the fancy intake kits. They do appear to have a smoother flow than the ribbed and wrinkled intake currently on a stock 4.6.
I do like Fram products, been using their oil and air filters for years on several different vehicles. Never had a problem with them. I LOVE that no-slip coating they put on the oil filters.

Not to change the subject, but have you checked out the opinions on Fram oil filters in the oil forums? I use Fram filters also ... have for years ... and never a problem with any of my engine's durability. By most comments, you'd think a Fram was built with the planned explosion of your engine in mind. lol.
50 horsepower from just an air filter seems a tad extreme, to me, but the truck does breath and accelerate better. Next to add premium fuel and then after running boards or tubes, possibly a superchip.
If that filter adds 50 hp, then i should stick some parts stickers on and gain another 50 hp. No way no how. Only way that would work is with tons of other mods to take advantage of it.
Ive seen the engine dynos guys, it actually makes a little more then 50 horses. They are a very free flowing air filter design and the increased air helps the enigne to make so much power. Had a friend put one on his 4 banger ranger and that thing ran a 13 second quarter mile.
I know for a fact if I dropped that in my 300 inline six, all I would feel is my wallet that much lighter. Truck is speed density, computer can't adjust for that much more air, so all it does it richen the mix a little, not enough to get anywhere near that. Even if I ported/polished and gasket matched all the intake it wouldn't get close to that. You have to have a better cam to take advantage of more air.
That Must Be Quite A Ranger, My Buddys Cobra That Has 425 Hp Does Around 13.25 In The Qtr.. At 113mph If I Remember Right.. The Last 4 Banger Ranger I Drove Wouldnt Hit 100 Mph In A Mile
its an 03' , its my buddies car, he rarely drives it , i think it has 5000 miles on it, he has changed the exhaust and the shifter and ithink the air intake.. that thing is crazy fast..
OK to settle it all .... even a K&N KIT..the whole shebang... only claims to give a little over a 15 HP increase on a Lightning engine...OK? So, let's not get all persnickety about it all.
All I asked is if anyone else had any comments .. and by that, I was wondering if anyone had installed an Airhog and thought they felt any improvement. I SEEM to feel improved acceleration, but I haven't had the chance to test it in the place where I always "get it on" a bit .. as mentioned above.
Since I don't have the whole shebang ... the whole smoother, round, polished and prettified intake system I doubt I have that much gain in HP, but yes .. there is a difference, albeit by seat of the pants measure, probably not worth the cost. But then again ... is a 15 horsepower gain for a whole system worth the $250 -$300 that most complete systems cost? Not to me...nope.
