ok, after putting a flomaster 40 series on my 5.4L and doing 2 turn downs to the road, i am not at all impressed. i was then told by a shop mechanic that they need to break in to "open up"? he said they will sound better as they go. right now mine is not much louder than stock, so im not happy. so is it true that they need to break in? i have never heard of such a thing...... thanks in advance !!!
My dad had a 50 series on his f150 5.4L and it was louder than stock at first but not that much louder.....and it did get a touch louder as he got more miles on it.
Your shop guy is feeding you crap. If indeed there is break-in, it will work the other way. A lot of soot will build up in the muffler making it quieter.
i think im just going to remove the cat and run a 3" pipe in its place. just go from the stock "y" pipe and into the 40 series, dumped to the road. that should give me what im looking for........ we will see. has anyone tried this yet?
ok steina..... you have just contradicted what 90f1505.0L has just said.... so now im really confused and all that i know for sure is that my turn downs do not sound louder....... they sound like ***** !!!!
If the muffler you had installed isn't as loud as you wanted, the tips won't make a lot of difference. Did you talk to the tech about what you wanted noise-wise before you had the 40 installed, or did you leave it up to him? I personally like the sound of the FlowMaster on my Explorer, but it's not as loud as others.
well, i decided to have it installed based on hearing other vehicles with them.... and mine is not as good. im going to cut out my cat in the morning and run a straight pipe in its place to see how that sounds..... it should open it up quite a bit.
Flowmasters don't have any packing inside to break in. They have angled pieces of metal to bounce the sound waves off from each other. There's no possible way to "break one in". As far as turn downs go, they make your exaust quieter. More of the same sound wave bouncing thing. I put glass packs on a F100 with a 390, and it was too loud. I installed turn downs that exited just in front of the rear end, and it was much quieter.
no they dont need to be broken but me and everyone else i know their flowmasters got louder after a day or so, i think it has to do with the coating inside it
well Steina I have been kinda busy the past couple of days so I wasn't able to comment on the turn down issue. The only way the turn downs make a difference if you are either slammed to the ground OR running with no cats and just headers and a flowmaster. So YES it is twice as loud if you DO NOT have turn downs on as long as the truck is at stock level or lifted. I have been driving my wife nuts with this subject for last couple of weeks. Trust me on this one. That is just my opinion....... By the way I have a Ravin R-33 instead of a Flowmaster. So that might be the difference.....
