How hard is it to replace the axle seals and the rear brake shoes on my 1995 Ford F150... It has the axel with a RGVWR of 3777 pounds. Any tips will be appreciated
I beleive its like any semi floating axle, you have to pull the diff cover, remove the C-clips holding the axle shafts in, pull the shafts out and then you have access to the bearings and seals. But if they arent leaking, then its a waste of time.
thanks alot for the information.. I wouldn't replace them but the driver side is leaking and it causes the brakes to pull hard when i put light presure on them
Probably be a good idea to replace the bearings while your in there, I would considering what you have to do to get to them. Bearings usually arent very expensive. You may want to buy a Haynes or Chiltons manual as well, they will describe exactly how to remove the axles and replace the bearings and seals, usually manuals are less than $20.
As far as doing the rear brakes, invest in a brake spring tool, you can do it with a screwdriver, but the tool has a spoon shaped end the will work alot better. Doing rear brakes is pretty easy, not as easy as pads and rotors, but shouldnt take you more than a couple hours to do brakes and seals. And since you have to pull the axles, its alot easier to do brakes without the hub flange being in your way, I would pull the axles first. Make sure you only take apart one side at a time so you have something to reference back to if you need help.
