the ford gold is it just a starter or does it have alarm system also
starter/ alarm/rke in one system please look at the link i posted above. in the 12 volt part you will find the systems also www.fordaccessoriestore.com and you will find the information on fords unit with the posted msrp
I checked out both sites but did not see any reference to "gold." I didn't even see a remote listed on the dealer site. But the msrp on the ford site seemed reasonable for the full-blown unit.
go into the ford site. they break it down under these two links in the site look at the right side for remote and vechicle surcurity the link i tryed did not work
so go into the store and look at the right side lists they are both there

..... For far less than dealer prices you get way more quality, better features, better warranty and by far better range. ...
TOTALLY agree with that statement...
but I have been on the wrong end of the "this aftermarket system caused this..." statement and even though I KNEW I would win in the end, at what cost and how much time, aggravation, and trouble ?
Aftermarket IS better and cheaper...
but just don't have the time to let them point fingers
like if my truck won't turn over....
Oops - the starter drained the batteries... buy two new batteries and then when we find it's not that... buy a new alternator... and then when we find it's not that...
i just don't have the hours left in the day to go thru that
I have a compustar system (2wss-as) and it is great. It is a paging type andrange specs to be 1.25 miles I get around a mile. The reason I got the system is not for the range but the frequency it operates at. It works in every building I've been in. The dealer I bought mine from says the install easier and cleaner than most others.
Just do your own homework and check to see what works best for you.

When I responded to this thread I didn't realize how many of you may be in the dark as to what the dealer can and cannot say to you. The one and only main problem I've EVER encountered with the PSD remote start draining the batteries is a lack of a diode on the wait to start wire(99-02-I believe). If a diode wasn't placed in line there would be a 4-5 amp draw on the charging system(keeping the glow plugs powered up) which in turn would drain the batteries in a day or two of not driving. No offence but the ford piece is , well, a pile of sh*&!! If you go to a reliable shop and talk to a competant salesman and an installer and get all the facts you WILL be happier with an aftermarket system.Sorry to ramble on but when a problem arises most people will go to the dealer and the FIRST thing they will tell you is that it is the aftermarket product in your vehicle causing the problem usually not the case but in some cases maybe just do your homework on A) the product, and B) the shop that you take it to. At my shop it is my duty to take care if these issues at the dealership or with the customer regardless of where the vehicle is. I hope this is of help to anyone looking if more info is needed contact me
i wondered what the 2 diodes in the ford kit where for. i think the worst part of the ford kit is no instrutions with the kit you have to find them and carefully read them for your model .for each car or truck they have different sheets depending on what you have"factory" and want it to do. mine is ford gold w rmst.vss. and rke. brass tacks it's a audiovox code alarm ca630 unit w a ford part number on it. im a mechanic and can read very well and after 40 + years know my cars but even i opted to let them have a ford reg'd installer do it for safety reasons.
toolfan wrote "COMPETANT" and that is the big trick in one word. to many shops are not and are just out for the fast buck and then goodby
heres the address for ford instructions about 1000 pages total so any one can see COMPETANT is a major factor.thanks toolfan http://www.gemsen.com/ford/
I think that most people find that aftermarket alarms offer more features and are generally preferred over OEM units, but OEM units generally offer convenience which is a considerable issue for some. I've decided to put my own alarm in this time as I couldn't agree more with the competency issue and I hate paying $600 or $700 for a $250 (MSRP) alarm. I ordered a Compustar 2WSS-AS (first time dealing with this brand) off of eBay that comes with the wiring diagram for my specific vehicle. At $250, this will be an interesting test of competence vs. stupidity (I'll see which one wins out in the end).
