If I may mention the fluid, it's SynchroGlide by Specialty Formulations. If you want to learn more you can go to www.bobistheoilguy.com . You can get information about them from the home page. So far I like what feel and hear . We'll see how it handles the real cold morning temps. I'll let you know.

i checked it out,it looks interesting but it doesn't say anything about it being MERCON compatible
If you have a manual, then it probably won't matter. I think that only comes into play when you have an auto, and there is compatibility issues with the clutch packs.

Whimsey, I look forward to your cold temp report. If it works nicely I may get some. MolaKule (the company owner) told me a year ago to run Redline MTL and I did not due to the thickness, but the Syncroglide is about between ATF and MTL in thickness. I would probably have tried Syncroglide already but for the Redline D4 has only been in for 6000 miles. Hate to sacrifice it and doubt it would be wise to transfer it to the Aerostars automatic with manual tranny debris in it.
I thought we were not to use EP adds in the man. trans?
But these are built into the fluid, not an additive in the sense of an aftermarket pour in bottle. I believe the M5OD will get trashed by rear end lube, even if low enough viscosity, because the high sulfer will eat the syncros, but the SyncroGlide and the Redline D4 (and I believe most Redline gear lubes too) have yellow metal friendly EP additives, so it's OK. I like the EPs in Redline D4 for the Aerostar A4LD automatic tranny.

This fluid is rated GL4 so it's safe for "yellow" metals as tallpaul said. If it was rated GL5, as most gear oils then it would not be safe for this tranny. The opposite is also true that the SynchroGlide cannot be used in final-drive hypoid-type diffs or auto trannies.
Brian, it's $28.95 per gallon, plus shipping from KS. Our trannies take just about the entire gallon.
It's supposed to be 11*F here tomorrow morning . I'm looking forward to seeing how it shifts then. I'll let you know.
In my 2002 owner's manual and the Haynes repair manual it says 3.75 quarts. I was there when they filled it. It was on a lift so it was level. And it took almost the 1 gallon/4 quarts. There was only a little bit left. Per the instructions it was filled till it just started to run out. Do you have the F-150 or the Ranger? If you have the Ranger maybe that takes 2.75 quarts.

Its a Ranger. I figured a M5OD was a M5OD no matter what it was in. I guess that ain't true
I do think the F150 M5OD is larger than the Ranger version. BTW, as mine sits the tranny is angled up maybe 15 degrees. I can only get about 3.5 qts in but jacked the one side of the truck up to get the last 0.3 qt. Think mine said 3.8 qts. Don't forget, to fill this tranny, run a plastic hose (get about 4 feet from hardware) of a size that presses snugly into the fill hole, route it up next to the engine, and enjoy pouring while leaning over the fender. I can actually watch the fluid going in at the tranny on my F150.
I made my own pump. Walmart had marine gear pumps for like 8.00 and it looked cheap. I made my own by taking an old hand-lotion bottle and get a hose that fit (pushed on) the pump. I filled an old 24 ounce plastic pepsi bottle with D4 ATF and screwed the hand-lotion pump onto the bottle. stuck the hose into the tranny and started pumping
It was 18*F here today and the "thicker" SynchroGlide worked real well. There was no stiff or difficult gear engagements . In fact it went into gear EASIER and smoother than with the factory Mercon, which is a lot thinner, at similar cold temps .
Looks like I may have to order some Syncroglide. What to do with the hardly used D4? Maybe can filter it and then use in the Aerostar. Anyway, too cold around here for me to mess with it yet. Maybe in a couple months. Thanks.
