If this has been discussed earlier, I apologize. Direct me to the thread area, and I will check it out. Anyway, Saturday for the first time, I was able to look at an actual quart of Mobil 1 EP. I immediately noticed the 5w30, and 10w30 viscosities do not carry the "Energy Conserving" certification, on the back with the "API Doughnut". What is up with that? My guess is the 15,000 interval changes, the oil is probably loaded with additives and modifiers. The regular "new" Mobil 1 carries the "EC" certification. Anyone know the reason? I have always used oils with "energy conserving" certified. Thank You ED.
This stuff may be geared more for BMW and others with 15,000 mile recommended change intervals. M1 EP carries ACEA A1,B1,A5 and B5 as well as API CF ratings.
As a side note, I thought Mobil was only going to sell the 5000 mile formula in bulk for oil change places and dealers. I saw it in quart bottles.
So the Mobil 1 EP no longer carries the API starburst? Hm..
I can understand why, but our continued support for such oil would then make us hypocritcal in our (general) stance against Amsoil. Then again...Mobil isn't some MLM either, but a legitmate lubrication-specialist. Hm...just food for thought I guess, thinking out loud...
Saurian, The Mobil 1 "EP - Extended Performance" oil does indeed contain the API "Starburst" certification (unlike Amsoil), but what I am referring to is when you look on the back side of the container, the API "doughnut" does not say "Energy Conserving", where it usually is. I hope that description makes sense, but Mobil 1 EP is API certified with the starburst, just no 'EC'. ED
PS Speaking of Amsoil. Has anyone noticed how they try to make it look like their oil has the starburst symbol, on their quart plastic containers, but it is not the "official" symbol? I'm sure Amsoil is a good oil, but it's multi-level marketing is a complete turn-off to me. It's similar to the Amway marketing group.
I just put some in my Excursion v-10 and going to run it a year with a filter change at 6 months. It does have the API doughnut on the bottle so I am going to give it a shot. I am sick of draining oil every 3 months on three cars.
Why do you do it in the first place based on time? If the car is driven enough so no moisture can accumulate in the oil, you could change it after X miles.
