i bought my 00 250sd with 75000 miles on it each week the lifters started to tap a little more when i started it up (cold) and now im nervous that i have a big problem now, i hear the lifters all the time now, very faint even when its warmed up. do you think the dealer will fix it or just change the oil and give me some bull?its it costly to fix?
Hows your oil pressure gauge about center? Change the oil use castrol 5/30 or motorcraft oil and a motorcraft filter and let us know how it does. Thats my best advise for now.
I'll second that oil recommendation. 5/20 is what the book says on my 02 but I use 5/30. 99 with 75K ain't old cept for who had it before you? Service history come with it? Oil pressure good? My old 99 had a few seconds of this around 80K in cold weather but went away after starting and long before warmup. My 02 has now 74K and no problems with this. Change out the oil as that's the first step.Don't know how effective it is but they sell Top Oil for liter problems. I don't know if it's gimmick or actually works? Another thought would be one of the lower viscosities motor flush you use before changing the oil to clean out gunk? This too could be just something extra to spend your money on but in theory of the idea it makes sense? trimman
These engines don't have lifter problems very often. A common noise that sounds like bad lifters is exhaust leaks caused by broken manifold studs where the manifolds attach to the heads. Usually the passenger's side is the worst.
thanks for the replies, its definataly lifters, though it does have a small manifold leak, the oil pressure is about 3/4 the way up the gauge, has a motorcraft filter from dealer ,but not sure of the oil

Talk about exhaust bolts!! My right side manifold had a big crack in it my hands are still dirty from working on it. I got all the studs out except two on the right rear. I have a half inch of stud sticking out in both holes. Vise grips and heat tomorrow. I think one is gonna break so I'm gonna have to weld a nut on it. Oh fun If I can't get em out I'm gonna have to pull the motor and drill and tap...Oh God here my prayers!!!!!LOL
99% sure its the lifters loud as all hell, taps away and sometimes you can hear the oil working into it and pumping up the lifter , but it never goes away completally. this is one of the noises there is also a throw out bearing noise when you let off the gas, dont hear it when on the gas,its an automatic tranny and i cant say the noise isnt a pully becuase this weekend will be the first chance to crawl under and have a look. coworker says wow the engine sounds like a diesel, it is gas right? that makes me feel good about my new truck.
Guys ! I maybe missing something here ! but a 5.4L is a overhead cam motor.unless they were different in 00 than 02.I know the 02 don't have lifters. They do have cam followers.Maybe you have a case of piston slap that is bad and getting ready to break a piston skirt. The 5w20 oil is to thin though try 5w30.
Please correct me on the lifter thing if I'm wrong.

Exactly what I was thinking also. I dont have that engine but I thought all the modular ford engines didn't have lifters. Roller rockers instead.
I had a 4.6 at work and the timing chain guides wore out and caused the timing chain to slap against the timing cover giving it a lifter kinda slap sound. It wasnt a steady on time sound so I knew it wasnt one of the lifters. These motors still have what I call a lifter, has a little ball on the end that pushes the follower up so it rides on the cam.
They don't have lifters like an old OHV engine had but they do have Hydraulic Lash Adjusters which work essentially the same. The cam follower is supported on one end by the valve and by the HLA on the other end. The cam pushes on the middle of the follower.
you got me there for a second this is my first ford but bad lifters sound the same in every engine i think, piston slap would not come and go i think?bottom or rod bearings would be constant worse when cold ithink it could only be cam bearings or lifters, i need to go drive another sd to see if the other noise i have is ther or not,its strange you hear it on the motors deacceleration and not acceleration, going to dealer this week to see if i get the sausage or not
