I found an article from the "Pioneer Press" (newspaper in St. Paul).
Some noteable information about the St. Paul plant
- Average assembly worker earns $55K a year.
- UAW contract states that the Ranger must be assembled in the US. This contract expires in 2007
- Rangers are already made in Thailand under the Mazda name for foreign sales
- Closure would likely not happen until 2007
- Ranger sales are DOWN 23.8% from 2004
If they close the St. Paul plant, where would Ford build them?
I dont think Ford is planning on halting production of the Ranger any time soon. It's been the best selling compact what, like 17 years running? That would make no sence.
The article mentioned in an earlier post said that in '99' Ford built 348,000 Rangers but in '05' through Nov. they only built 113,000 Rangers. I would think any manufacturer would be happy with making at least a 100,000 copies of anything, yet the plant, sadly, is in jeopardy. Article also said there was a redesign for the Ranger due around 2010 with the possibility of putting the nameplate on hiatis for awhile. Good luck with that Ford. I like my 2001 but if they (Ford) don't build them in the US I won't be buying one again! Just the way I feel about it.
