I never chacked the pumpkin for lube. You know, the first thing you always do when you buy a used truck, pop the pumpkin covers and top off all your lubes. Yea, never did that. Apparently, a large amout of crud got into the pumpkin, probably from very work out axle seals. Yea, it ate up the ring and pinion. All the other internals are still in good shape. Axles are still fine, as is the carrier. I think I toasted the pinion bearing and the mud was getting in the way of the pinion gear seating in the ring gear, and it just let go. REAL nasty looking. So let that be a lesson; ALWAYS pop the covers and see what's going on. After seeing the rear end, I've gotta pop the front cover just to see what THAT mess looks like.
I thought i posted up that the deal fell through. My ride kept putting it off and soemone else bought it . Instead I'm looking at doing a dual fuel gasoline/propane conversion, possibly with a supercharger on top. Propane is a sure thing once i dig up about $200, supercharger is if i can get one off of a GTP for cheap enough.
Very cool. I'm taking 2 cars to the junkyard and gonna do some parts scrounging and horse trading. Right now, I've got my eyes on a few different things; I found 4 or 5 Astro vans, all with Sag pumps, and I need about 6 sets of GM calipers to do rear disc brake conversions, plus the spindles, hubs, and brakes off a Monarch they have to do the disc brake conversion on my Mustang. We'll just have to see what they say. Thinkin of cutting a deal with the junkyard people for parts-removal and maybe putting parts on ebay. We'll have to see what they say and what kinda stuff I can dig up...
